An excellent basic introduction with good advice.

I bought my copy at a small store in Cairo, Egypt and devoured it.
The layout is appealing but a bit too appealing for my taste - a little too liberal with the color in areas that do nothing to enhance the sound advice within.
I've read many books on retailing and even owned a couple businesses myself. This book is better than most and I especially appreciated the explanation on location for your retail business. These authors explain why one type of location will work for a certain class of business, but not for another class - I've not found many writers that explain this differentiation, but it is of especial importance.
I rated this book four stars, but 4-1/2 would be more fair. The book is a good introduction but is skewed a little too sharply towards chain stores and franchises. Still, no serious entrepreneur should be without this book in their library!
I also greatly appreciated the lessons learned advice.
Retail Management is as useful in Alexandria, Egypt as in Alexandria, Virginia!

Tons of helpful solved examples

I wish I had this when I was taking my probability courses. It presents concepts in a clear and understandable way, and the solved problems provide excellent guidance. After working through the solved examples, I finally had a better understanding of random variables, pdfs, cdfs, random processes, etc. I would strongly encourage solving as many problems as you can in this book as you are going through other texts or taking a class on this. Reading through a textbook may lull you into thinking you already understand it, and waiting a long time for feedback on homework may make you more lost in class. Doing exercises will help identify your weaknesses and provide instant feedback on areas you may need to study more. With this stronger foundation, you can appreciate and understand better what the other texts are discussing.

A great exercise book

This book has many exercises with answers/solutions to each and every exercise covering a wide range of topics from probability. The book, however, should be used along with an appropriate probability textbook. An excellent companion to Hsu's book is the introductory text by Henk Tijms. This book contains many worked-out examples and exercises as well, but also explains why probability works and how it can be applied in practice. As engineering student, I learned a lot by using both books.

Essential supplement for any course in random processes

I used this book in conjunction with "Probability and Random Processes with Applications to Signal Processing" by Stark & Woods, and I would have to say that this Schaum's outline filled in the gaps nicely. Stark & Woods has a nice selection of exercises, but unfortunately there are no solutions to any of the problems in the book, so you have no way of knowing whether or not you have grasped the material. That is where this outline came in handy. It manages to cover all of the issues in random processes, including basic probability, random variables and multiple random variables, functions of random variables, convolution, estimation and decision theory, and queueing theory. Chapters five and six on the processing and analysis of random processes are particularly useful to those readers who are interested in applications to signal processing and communications theory. Each chapter has an excellent selection of exercises with solutions to test your knowledge. The only possible drawback of this text is that it often approaches the material from a mathematician's viewpoint more than that of an engineer. Therefore, there are quite a few proofs included as exercises that probably won't be that helpful for students of the applied sciences. The reader should already be comfortable with multivariable calculus as well as linear algebra to get the most from this book. Also, though chapter one reviews probability quite well, this should probably not be your first excursion into the subject. The only difficult part of random processes that I found this book a bit weak on was on the subject of functions of random variables. Again, this is probably because this text takes more of a mathematician's point of view and functions of random variables is more of an engineering subject.

Excellent casual referance

This book has achieved just the right balance between throughness and overview so that I have been able to refer to it in a casual manner (once every 3-6 months) and been able to use the results without taking a new college course. I am a practicing Analog electronics engineer and thermal engineering is something I only do once (perhaps more ?) during a design/project.

Great material, LOTS of errors and typos

This book has some great material that can't be found anywhere else, such as clear examples for calculating silicon dies thermal stresses and other electronic packaging niche topics. It's well written, but sometimes fails to provide justifications for some of the important assertions that the readers are forced to accept. The quantity of glaring typographical errors and errors in formulas made this otherwise great text just mediocre.

Excellent Step-By-Step Calculations for the Mundane

This is a necessary text for all engineers. Such textbooks are highly useful in establishing standards for mundane calculations performed in many branches of engineering. I just recently replaced my first edition of this book with the newest so that I would have access to the new enviromental engineer calculations added.

The book is now divided into civil, mechanical, architectural, and chemical engineering. If you can't find what you need, the safest bet is to check out the mechanical section next. In my opinion, the mechanical section is far too large and it is time to abandon the division of this book by degrees. I would divide it up by task; this would require simplifying the table of contents and an expansion of the index but then who really uses a TOC with a handbook?

Why do I use the word mundane? You won't find complicated calculation procedures here, nor will you find a lot of selection criteria information. What I mean is a table ranking technology. A good example of this is the series of books by Coulson and Richardson on chemical engineering. In that series, under drying, for example, all the technology is ranked according to product dryness, particle sizes, etc.. None of this is presented here. What makes this book useful is that is presents a procedure understandable to junior engineers and clients for solving a particular problem such as calculating a slab thickness or the size of a ventilation duct.

This book is a must-have if you are a consultant, contractor, or just want an understanding of a basic engineering calculation.

Mr. Hicks' approach to sizing pipe for compressed air

Mr. Hicks has done a wonderful job in compling equations, however, he has missed the practical applications in compressed air and vacuum systems. I initially used his theoritcal position on calculating pressure drop in pipe for compressed air. His position seems reasonable and logical until you compare the results with practical applications. Ingresoll-Rand, the air compressor manufacturer, published tables of pressure drop verses pipe sizes, delivery pressures and ACFM. Futher ASPE has published a data book which leads the engineer into an empirical equation for calculating pressure loss in compressed air piping. The results with both Ingresoll-Rand and ASPE agree. Using Mr. Hicks' therotical approach drives the pipe size much larger than needed and therefore the cost of the project. My suggestion is that Mr. Hicks contact I-R and ASPE to incorporate their empirical approach to sizing pipe for compressed air and vacuum systems.

I respectfully submit, that you need to appreciate Mr. Hicks' position. He has provided a conservative approach that will work in almost every situation. The empirical approach that you advocate may well work in most situations but I'll bet there is little margin built in for contingencies. True, your solution may cost less, which is important. But will the low-margin, low cost solution still work 1 or 2 years from now or will the pipe size be too small to allow for degradation/changes? Customer repeat business must be a consideration, too.
I'm not trying to be confrontational, and I understand what you're saying. But you have to appreciate the position that Mr. Hicks must take in such a handbook, and he takes the only logical one, which is to be on the conservative side. People doing more than a couple of these calculations in a year in fact should consult more in-depth material, as you did.

Use this as a reference

This book is an excellent handbook for the contractor and construction professional. It clearly cuts through a lot of the hype that comes from the hardware and software sales departments and tells you what you need to know. The authors have spent a lot of time reviewing various software from every angle. They tell you what it can do and what it cannot do. The book covers software for CAD, specifications, estimating, scheduling, accounting, job costing, preparation of forms and contact management. In some cases the authors tell you a few things that the software vendors don't want you to know.

Don't expect to read this from cover to cover. This is a book that you will use as a reference. It is especially good for the contractor who is just getting into computers or for the person that needs to get more out of the computer.

Softplan CAD software is a pain!

Chief Architect is better. Soft plan is lousy by its designers. Softplan cares more about protecting its software more than customer usability. One cannot make a move without involving the use of an astronomically expensive USB key, that if you lose will cost you almost a thousand dollars to replace!. If you wish to use on more than one machine or location (lets say a laptop, desktop, home or office) be prepared to shell out thousands more. The only alternative is to keep track and never forget or loose the user key! Pain in the butt software. Be prepared to deal with a militant and paranoid company who is always closed when you have a problem! You will be spending more time crawling around the back of your computer or driving to get your forgotten user key than drawing plans!
