About the Author
William Cunningham is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Minnesota where he taught for 36 years in the Departments of Botany and Genetics and Cell Biology as well as the Conservation Biology Program, the Institute for Social, Economic, and Ecological Sustainability, the Center for Environmental Learning and Leadership, and the McArthur Program in Global Change. He received his Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Texas in 1963 and spent two years at Purdue University as a postdoctoral fellow. At various times, he has been a visiting scholar in Sweden, Norway, Indonesia, and China, as well as several universities and research institutions in the United States. Dr. Cunningham has devoted himself to education and teaching development at the undergraduate level in biology. He began his educational career in structural biology but for the last 10-15 years has concentrated on environmental science, teaching courses such as Social Uses of Biology; Garbage, Government, and the Globe; Environmental Ethics; and Conservation History. Within the past four years, he has received both of the two highest teaching honors that the University of Minnesota bestows -- The Distinguished Teaching Award and a $15,000 Amoco Alumni Award. He has served as a Faculty Mentor for younger faculty at the university, sharing the knowledge and teaching skills that he has gained during his distinguished career.
Mary Ann Cunningham teaches geography and geographic information systems (GIS), and environmental studies at Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY. Her research involves using GIS to assess landscape-level problems in conservation and biodiversity. In particular, she is interested in understanding the nature of fragmentation in grassland environments and the effects of fragmentation on the make-up of bird communities. The agricultural landscapes where she has been working represent a complex and fascinating interaction of issues concerning working landscapes, resource use, remnant wildlife habitat, and landscape aesthetics. It is at the intersection of these issues that she likes to try and understand the geography of physical environments. Mary Ann earned a PhD in Geography at the University of Minnesota, an MA in Geography at the University of Oregon, and a BA in Geology at Carleton College.

Gentle on the issues but well written.

I am an environmental science teacher who chooses to use this book. I agree with the long winded reviewer that this book is gentle on the issues, but believe this approach to be important in an introductory course. As the teacher, I make it my job to color the issues I find important. The 8th edition is out, so this version will become less popular.

Clear pictures and text, captures interest, motivates people to be kind to our planet

It is no surprise to me that this book won a 2016 Best Book Award. I know you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but the picture of a boy looking into his reflection in the water does give a peek into what this book is about: simple pictures and graphs to enhance our knowledge of the environment and man's relationship to the environment.
I used this book for my Environmental Science class and found myself looking forward to read the assigned reading, because the text captured my interest in a relevant and clear way. Being a visual learner, I could understand the environmental concepts and issues with ease given the accompanying, clear illustrations - which still stick in my mind today.
After taking this course, my passion for being an environmental steward increased. I also became a more informed citizen, understanding the connection between political or cultural issues related to underlying environmental factors. This new passion and knowledge gained from this course and book motivated me to volunteer in the in a local youth conservation program, where we spent 7 weeks removing invasive species, planting native plants, building hiking trails, counting native species, camping atop a mountain range to engage in post-forest fire and erosion rehabilitation work...my Environmental Science teacher and this book gave me a greater appreciation and understanding of the larger implications for the work we did. When the days were long and work intensive, I would remember the lessons I learned from "Environmental Science: A Global Concern" and gain extra motivation and energy to do my best and part to care for the earth.
Now, speaking as a teacher, I can attest that this book is a great read and handy for students - it doesn't feel like a typical textbook, captures interest and motivates students to be kind to our planet!

Textbook

Required textbook for a college Environmental Science class. Since I live near the Hudson River, it is quite informative.
