There is no gain saying that this is an extremely good text as far as the simulation of Thermal systems is concerned.It is especially very useful for solar-thermal systems.The title of the book couldn't have been more apt.The writing style and the presentation of the relevant background materials is just fine.Targetted primarily at design and simulation engineers,the authors dive from the first chapter into the main fabrics of thermal systems modeling and simulation without the distracting gory tales of how the sun came to be etc,which are the hallmarks of some so-called thermal systems design texts.If you are a thermal system analyst who want to get to the nitty-gritty of thermal systems' modeling and simulations from the word go, i believe the authors had you in mind as far as this book is concerned.
However,someone should please inform Professor Howell et al,that this superb book is long overdue for a thorough review to bring it to modern programming standards.The sample programs at the end of the book will not find the light of the day with modern Fortran and Basic codes.They are spaghetti codes that modern engineers and scientists may not give a second look.Apart from these,the book is what every thermal engineer needs.

Hoyt traces the Pacific War back to its 19th century roots, clarifying the connection between Bushido, emperor worship, and Japan's emergence as a totalitarian military state obsessed with expansion. What renders the book unusual is that events are described in large part from the Japanese point of view. Hoyt discusses wartime propaganda and news management, as well as the Japanese conception of Allied atrocities, and reveals how deeply offended the Japanese were by the disrespect to their war dead by American soldiers on the battlefield, and above all by the Allied bombing of civilians of the home islands. In effective counterbalance, Hoyt provides a detailed reminder of the way the Japanese treated Allied prisoners of war. In a final section he takes pains to dispel what he calls the one great myth of the Pacific War, that the atomic bomb caused the surrender of Japan, arguing that the Japanese considered the Bomb merely another weaponan awesome one, to be sure, but not nearly as destructive or morale-threatening as the B-29 firebombings. Using the official 101-volume Japanese-language history of World War II, which has never before been mined by Western historians, Hoyt has compiled a brilliantly accurate history of the war from the Japanese standpoint. New light is shed on why the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, on the Bataan death march, and on the issue of whether the Japanese were defeated by the B29 or by the Hiroshima bomb. Huge in scope, superbly researched, and eminently readable, this is essential for all World War II collections. Interesting & Comprehensive Overview Of War In The Pacific!

One interesting aspect to this book is the fact that it traces Japanese military history back to the mid 19th century, which provides the reader with a better historical perspective to understand the rampant militarism and unbridled war fever characterizing that country at the outset of WWII. Author Edwin Hoyt does an impressive job covering the details of the war, and brings some provocative and fresh insights into several issues concerning the war as to why Japan decided to initiate it, why we were so unprepared to meet the challenge in 1941, and why they so fatefully misunderstood American character and behavior so badly to not understand that the US would enter the fray with a "terrible vengeance and resolve".
The author provides a lot of interesting data for the reader's consideration along the way. For example, he introduces the strategic notion held by the Japanese of the "eight corners of the world under one roof", or 'hakko ichiu'. This, according to the author, is key in understanding their military preparations for the war, and why their historical rivalry with the United States made them believe war was quite likely, if not inevitable, between the two countries. This is something the Japanese seemed to understand much better than did most Americans, who never saw the conflict as either likely or inevitable. Of course, given American tendencies toward international isolation, it isn't surprising we were caught so unaware.
The book is impeccably researched and documented, and the writing style is literate yet not to scholarly to be off-putting. While it certainly doesn't read like a novel, it is very entertaining to read. The author gives credence to the notion that the war in the Pacific was a quite complicated and intricately interwoven series of events that takes some deliberate effort to understand in context. Thus, his approach is painstakingly deliberate, detailed, and comprehensive. This is an excellent one-volume study of WWII in the Pacific theater of operations, and I recommend it to anyone seriously inclined to learn as much as possible about the history of the Japanese so as to better understand what happened that led to the decision to attack Pearl Harbor as well as an excellent overview of the conduct of the war itself.

Another excellent book by Ed Hoyt, as a historian I am always looking for the best books and material to read and research. Hoyt is the best! Great book for anyone interested in reading about the war in the Pacific from the Japanese point of view!

A Different Perspective

This book's focus is on the motivations and background activity relating to Japanese Imperialism. It also has the Japanese viewpoint of Western Imperialism and how foreign activity (primarily British & American) influenced Japan. Since this perspective is seldom found in histories of the war in the Pacific - I rate it as 5 stars. Interesting and informative . . .
