A Masterwork

I bought this book in 1987 when I took Morry Degroot's course in decision theory. I have used it ever since. The text makes all the connections between bayesian decision theory and probability theory and covers the useful techniques in both areas. Of course, Morry made the book even more effective through the excellent problem sets that are included. And they can be challenging as any really informative exercise would be.

I hesitated to write anything on this because it seemed presumptuous to "review" anything from Morry. But, I thought that I might be allowed this one testimonial to a person I will never forget and a book that has helped me for so long.

good handbook for finance and IO research

It is a wonderful book for financial and Industrial Organization research. The book illustrates how to use Bayisan Statistics for updating counsumers/traders' information about products/stocks, which is widely used in asymetric/coordination games and in uncertainty research.
The book is clearly written, easy to understand even without a solid backgroup in Baysian Statistics. And with a normal prior distribution of belief, you will get a beautiful/approachable normal posterior distribution. This definitely simplies the information-updating process much.

A goal is a dream with a deadline

A wonderful and refreshing view of business guidlines simply stated with the common sense thought process in place, and a bit of humor to boot. I have given many copies of this book to fellow associates and friends over the years. All have enjoyed the reading and many have profited by the experience. It is a book of knowledge and should be read over and over. As a nephew of Leo,I know this book represents his wisdom which he shared with the readers of his book.

Not what I was looking for...

This is a good bathroom book... but I was looking for something else. This book is a collection of sayings that may be useful for someone looking for a quote for a speech... but is not something to sink your teeth into.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed some of the quotes, but I was looking for something more engaging.

Deceptively Simple

I founded my own company over ten years ago, and could have saved myself a lot of trouble over the years if I had understood then, the wisdom contained in this deceptively simple book.

I've recommended this book to many other entrepreneurs, and used it as one of the texts when I taught briefly at University.

The sayings seem simple and can be understood immediately by a novice entrepreneur. At the same time, experienced business people will recognize that only a tremedous depth of experience could produce such simplicity. In the case of this book, the depth of experience comes from dozens of CEOs and seasoned business people, in addition to the author, Leo Helzel, who is properly considered a Master of Entrepreneurship.

This book widely specifies WHAT to do in strategic planning but it hardly explains HOW to do it. What I expect when reading this kind of topics is not the concept but rather the application procedures and practical techniques for implementing those concepts in an effective and innovative way. In consequence, I found this book repetitive and non productive for planning specialists. However it may serve a lot to beginners and students.

In Applied Strategic Planning, the authors give a comprehensive step-by-step guide to conducting applied strategic planning. They clearly demonstrate organisations' need for strategic planning. The book is different from other strategic planning models in some significant ways. The major differences are in the values scan, organisational culture, strategic business modelling and integrating business and functional plans. The authors emphasise the importance of application considerations and environmental monitoring as on-going processes throughout the planning period. The authors produced a high quality book that is an important reference source whenever I need to undertake strategic planning.

The book provides the reader with an overall understanding of the process of applied strategic planning and the required steps and technology for using the model in a strategic planning process. The strategic planning model covers application and implementation from the inception of the plan to the post-implementation phase, making it very practical.

The model involves nine sequential steps as well as two continuous functions, namely environmental monitoring and application considerations, that are involved at each of the sequential phases. The sequential steps are planning to plan, followed by values scan, then mission formulation followed by strategic business modelling. Performance audit and gap analysis follow, these two being different aspects of a single phase. The last three phases are integrating action plans, contingency planning and implementation.

I read the book because I would like to increase my proficiency in and knowledge of practical strategic planning and to sharpen my consultancy skills. The book is very practical and easy to follow. As a consultant, I should be able to use the methodology in the course to manage the planning process.

Applied strategic planning provides an appealing model for transforming organisations. The model is future focused and leadership driven. It involves all people in an organisation. It produces a plan that is detailed, comprehensive, understood and accepted, and has the potential to generate energising force to drive the transformation of an organisation.

Not a strong offering.

Life Cycle Assessment is a complicated and controversial field when applied to environmental problems. Questions like "Paper or plastic?" are as ubiquitous as they are baffling. This book does little to clarify matters. It is at best an introduction to a subjective approach. It should not be surprising to the reader to find that the methods described in this book can be employed by separate analysts to reach entirely opposite conclusions.
In response to a critical review that appears in the Journal of Industrial Ecology v1:4, one of the authors of Environmental LCA defended the text with the argument that LCA is, and always will be a "soft science" and therefore may not satisfy readers that seek definitive answers, as no one methodology could be described as applicable to all problems. His defense is disingenuous. Despite its shortcomings, LCA is a promising tool worthy of further development. The goal of new books on the subject should be to advance towards a definitive methodology that results in consistent, interpretable conclusions. When faced with such an intractable, challenging problem as this, it does us all a disservice to suggest that we should just give up (and presumably settle for the kind of text this author has provided).
A definitive work on LCA would be a welcome addition to my library. This book is not it.

only scratches the surface of a complex subject

Life Cycle Assessment requires a more comprehensive and thorough approach than the author provides. Areas are left open, and the book raises more questions for the reader than the answers it provides. It is not a text that I will refer to to repond to critical questions. It was a disappointment to me.

This is the Bible

Now the theory is behind you and you are into Physical exams and History taking and diagnostics. This book is a must for you. In 397 Chapters it tells you about almost all human illnesses. Each chapter starts with theory (physiology), History taking, continues with Diagnosis and Treatment, it even tell you how to approach the patient what to look and what to disregard. Almost 2600 pages, takes two to carry, requires own stand in your home like Webster's dictionary but have more information compared to other 2600 page books due to fine print and unfortunately very minimal pictures or diagrams. You might want to get complete with pocket book edition for handiness when you need it. This book will not help in your diagnosis but when you think you had diagnosed than you can refer to this to see to confirm or rethink.

Excellent For Determining Scantlings On Traditional Boats

It is always a pleasure to get comments from readers, but I'm afraid that Rick Burner is a mite confused. The Elements Of Boat Strength was specifically written to make it not only possible to determine the scantlings for any boat (from a coasting schooner to a skiff) but to make the calculations required relatively easy. For some reason, Rick's review indicates that Boat Strength doesn't provide you with the information needed calculate the scantlings for traditional boats such as those in books by, say, Howard Chapelle or John Gardner. In fact, Boat Strength provides exactly this information. What's more, you can not only calculate the scantlings for the original construction method but for any modern variant and/or for any other material, from FRP to aluminum.

Read every word!

Great book! This book was just what I needed, while making boat repairs and contemplating my next purchase (or perhaps build).

With an undergraduate degree in Ocean Engineering with a couple of naval architecture courses under my belt, I really needed a professional's common sense, savvy discussion of boat design. With each page read I visualized the different construction details seen at boat shows and on friend's boats, I can trace failures observed back to the discussions.

The author's writing style really livens up the reading! I have read many books on the subject, this and "The Nature of Boats" are my favorites to date.

My only criticism is that the scantlings were noted to be appropriate for speeds up to 45 knots, I would have liked to book to include higher speed designs as that is my current interest, still looking.... Otherwise, five stars!

Wide but Shallow

Boat Strength covers just about every common building method for boats, from fiberglass to copper-nickel (copper-nickel?). It is quite easy to read for those with a slight technical bent. The many graphs and formulas allow easy determination of the proper scantlings for any particular boat, BUT... it covers only one system of scantlings (as Mr. Gerr points out in his introduction). If you enjoy reading authors like Howard Chapelle or John Gardner (the boat builder, not the author of thrillers) you will be left scratching your head. When they describe the construction of a particular boat you might wonder how the scantlings they used can be calculated from Mr. Gerr's rules. A hint-they cannot. The other disappointment is in a total lack of discussion of the theory behind the rules. Still, it is fun reading and very informative.
