Bad quality book, he has lack of statistics knowledge.

I guess the author has no knowledge in statistics and thinks the fault is from the people. Statistics is the base for quality, he only says that you have to make the people want to make the things right at first, and if they want, they can make it correct at first, so you have to make posters and events to make people willing to make things correct. Everybody knows that nobody wants to make things wrong, and it is statistically impossible to make things 100.00% correct, as he said it is possible. I suggest out of crisis, from Deming, who also made some implicit critics to the authors such this one, who does not know about statistics, and blames every worker from poor quality, when the real guilty is management.

A very practical and insightful book

This book contains excellent material, which shows what way to look if you want to increase your productivity/profitability. The whole approach is very customer-oriented, which makes it possible to avoid distinguishing between manufacturing and service businesses (and thus getting lost in irrelevant details). The concept of quality the way that Crosby presents it is fairly universal to all types of businesses. This lets one see to the bottom of the quality issue, which is essential for true understanding.
I found very useful the idea that quality should be observed in all business activities, not only customer-specific (e.g. hiring, bookkeeping, etc. vs programming). If this is neglected then the firm simply does not know the true cost of quality. Seems to be so obvious, but ask yourself if you really think of it this way. Also very useful is the suggested way to measure quality in dollars, instead of indirect measurements, like defects-per-KLOC and such. After all, everything boils down to money, and that's the only real indicator of performance.
The weak point of this book is its language: it is a little bit hard to read, especially if English is not native to you. It would be much better if it were written in decent English, instead of US spoken.
Another pitfall is a somewhat free use of terminology. Thanks to this, many authors argue that the book message is not (entirely) correct, but the point is that some of its statements should not be taken literally. One needs to grasp the true meaning, which Crosby attaches to some of his words, like "requirements".
I rate that book with 4 stars only because of readability, which could be better. The contents deserves full 5 stars, and I consider it a must-read for all managers.

A work of applied philosophy

On of the most basic conflicts in any management is the conflict between quality (do it right) and output (do it fast). Crosby starts our with the typical north American assumption that the two are embroiled in a zero-sum game, and then he blows the lid off - suggesting that by focusing on quality you can increase throughput. For example, by spending tens of thousands dollars on education to *prevent* heart attacks now - spent only on a targeted risk group - a health insurance company could avert heart attacks later, saving a million dollars or more. For a second example, if a manufacturing table has physical waste (scrap) and labor waste (re-work of bad parts), both can be eliminated by having zero defects in the first place, with a net increase in performance.

Crosby also spends a little bit of time talking about how to inspire the workforce to save money with a 'buck a day' program.

Then Crosby provides step-by-step suggestions on how to implement those philosophies in a manufacturing environment. I give the book four stars because it is a little dated, and is heavily oriented toward manufacturing. Still, this is a classic in the quality movement. If you are studying quality, don't go for the five-page summary of Crosby's ideas - go to the source!

About the Author
George C. Herring is Alumni Professor of history at the University of Kentucky. He received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Virginia and taught at Ohio University before moving to the University of Kentucky. He is the author of numerous books, articles, and essays, including The Secret Diplomacy of the Vietnam War: The Negotiating Volumes of the Pentagon Papers (1983) and LBJ and Vietnam: A Different Kind of War (1994). He served as editor of the scholarly journal Diplomatic History from 1982 to 1986 and was President of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations in 1990. In 1991, he served as Visiting Fulbright Scholar at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand and from 1993 to 1994, he was Visiting Professor of History at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point.

A (almost) complete reference

I bought the book as a practical reference in risk management/ applied financial engineering. I think the book accomplishes this goal.
It describes concepts and techniques in a clear, logical way and, most important, gives clearly outlined numerical examples, which help to implement the models. If all material would be written that way one didn't have to buy several introductory books and save a lot of money. This is especially true for professionals who want to implement things in a reasonable time without loosing time with (generally) confusing and incomplete derivations that have to be figured out afterwards through a painful process.
I must say though, that the work lacks to present some important concepts and techniques in interest rate risk management. As in many cases, fixed income applications were almost omitted. A treatment of PCA applications (hedging, simulation) would be very welcome and a more complete description with examples of interest rate models with implementations would complete this work.

Excellent reference for financial derivatives

I have read this book for the class of modeling financial derivatives and I was very impressed by the presentation of the theories of financial derivatives and risk management. The book covers derivative pricing in a very detailed form. THe best thing about this book is the presentation of the problems(mathematical) throughout the book, either through graphs, spreadsheet models, etc. It is not pure theory book, but it also contains many applications which encompas real finanical world. Such presentation enables the reader to easier comprehend the contents of the subject. Overall, the book is very very good for a beginner in finacial derivatives fiels, but it is also a great contribution to one more experienced in the field. Greatest emphasis was put on interest rate models, option models, volatility and risk management techniques.

Satyajit has written an extensive account of derivatives their building blocks, the risk they entail and the utilization of financial models to explain their use. The easy to follow tables and numeric examples are helpful for any early entrant into the domain of derivatives. Good as a textbook and to refer.

This book rocks

This book really rocks. Its a very compact book with collection of only those questions which are asked in an interview. I am a Core DBA and had no clue of Oracle Applications. I got interview call from a Top MNC for the position of Apps DBA and had no time to prepare for the interview. I just ordered this book and mugged all the questions and reviewd this book 2-3 times before the interview and to my surprise all the questions that interview panel members asked me where from this book and I got the job.

I think this is one of the best books written so far. It came to me as a blessing in this recession

One very big FAQ handbook

I did happen to review the book hot off the press courtesy of the author. So, here is my unbiased interview. The entire big is full of question and answer. And it counts to 325 questions. (Dont know why the number 325). It is a good accompaniment for people who are already having one of the author's earlier book "Oracle Applications DBA" or any other book.

Pros:
1. An exhaustive question bank
2. Questions are categorized into different sections like patching, workflow, upgrades. Hence it is easier for readers to pick up their topic and complete it.
3. Questions seems to cover both 11i and R12 question though author hasn't mentioned it.
4. Some questions are answered much more elaborately. Like pre-upgrade steps in 11i. It runs into several pages.
5. The book is actually a small handbook. And in much better typeface than the usual computer documentation guides.

Cons:
1. There is no quizzes at the end for self-evaluation
2. Indexing is not good. For example I found an index entry for CGI but not for CSI. Duh!

Book will definitely come in handy for any beginners trying to switch to Oracle Applications DBA field. Author has made earnest efforts to collect every technical question possible but interviews do go beyond your technical arena. Much of the questions in interview reflect on your experience like SOX, HIPAA , GSI model, SLA, Data security etc, which no book can guide.

I believe the managers and recruiters also should buy this book. It will help them too. Book is a good addition to your collection and a must for everyone who find themselves in either side of the interview table.

Though it's pretty old now

It's one of rare books covering Oracle EBS administration. Though it's pretty old now, you can still find much useful info regarding the topic. The beautiful thing about it - Joyjeet gives insights of Oracle EBS system. Things, that you can learn with experience and cannot find in documentation. I wish such book was released for R12 and R12.2. Great work, Thank you Joyjeet!
