Another book for women about men, this attempt at psychological/sociological exploration generalizes about relations between white, urban, middle-class men and women. Blaming socialization and stereotypic sex roles for the inability of men to relate to women, the author maintains that "only when a woman shares male risks can she really begin to understand men." Farrell uses cartoons, advertisements, personal and fictional anecdotes, references to movies, but few hard facts to substantiate his simplistic hypotheses. This is the most 'to the point' and honest book on the dating game ever written. Men and women have a hard time with it because it spot-on how men treat women as sex objects...but that wome reciprocate and treat men as success objects. The first 100 pages are must reading and will have you laughing...but mostly at yourself. Leigh

Every man should read this book.

I read this book long ago. I have re read parts of it over and to others. I have bought several copies. This last one I refuse to loan to anyone.

When I first read this book I said to myself; "There is at least one guy in this world that believes the same things I believe." This is about male--female relationships and while it does not change anything, it helps to understand the Double Standard that has forever existed between men and women.

Broad Overview

This book provides a very broad overview of all energy topics. Much of the information could probably be found in a more up-to-date form from the internet. The first section seems straight from the EIA's annual energy report. Do not purchase this book as an day-to-day guide for operations, calculations and benchmarks. Do buy this book if you're looking for a general description of energy topics.

I say this as a mechanical engineer as the electrical sections do seem to go into more depth.

I teach power plant technology in an applied sciences college of a large urban university. One of the ongoing challenges of teaching is finding a comprehensive textbook. Although not perfect as a textbook this is a great reference for developing student's foundation in power plant technology

i am a mechanical engineer working for the power generation industry. as one grows up in professional line, the responsibility also grows. as a mechanocal engineer i have been always reluctant to see the electrical aspect of the power generation until one day i have to take important decision concerning the electrical aspect of the power plant. this hand book came to my great help & stisfaction and took me through most of the electrical engg aspects related to power generation in a very very simple way. Topics like the harmonics, selection and imporatntace of many basic electrical components have been very well covered.i am glad to go through such a book. i would imagine such hand book is a must for practicing power engineers.

Typical McGraw-Hill Handbook

Like most other McGaw-Hill handbooks this is a collection of articles, which for the most part, have been written by equipment manufacturers. The information is often thin and superfical. Some areas of the book are so simplistic they're laughable. For example, among the "Rules of Thumb" there is this enlightening suggestion: " Understand the process before designing a control system for that process". Also there is this jem " Design the control system before implementing the control system". Still, the book isn't all bad. There is some good information here but it isn't consistent. I doubt there is enough useful information to justify the cost of this very expensive book.

Excellent text and overall coverage

This is an excellent, excellent book for the topic and coverage. Easily accessible and clearly written and organized, it is a pleasure to read. Some assumptions are made, but the short glossary can eliminate most of the problems with terms and vocabulary. The worst part is that there is not an updated version available in the two volume format. The authors do a superb job of linking themes, issues and personalities across the temporal and topographical space.

I was familiar with these types of "design" books. However, I thought the first in the series would be different from the subsequent volumes. Why did I think this? Because the book's description plainly states that included are "complete details, specs, costs... and floor plans." Untrue. If you are looking for more than pretty pictures, you won't get it here.

About the Author
Alan Marcovitz is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science and Engineering at Florida Atlantic University. He received Bachelors and Masters degrees in electrical engineering from M.I.T., and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. He taught at the University of Maryland and then went on to found the Department of Electrical Engineering at Florida Atlantic University in 1970. He is the coauthor of several other textbooks on Logic Design and Computer Programming.
