Annie and David Getchell has been using, selling, and writing about outdoor gear for more than 35 collective gears. This year they finished a four-year run as on-air co-host and producer, respectively, of the PBS series "Anyplace Wild." Annie is an experienced cross-country and downhill ski racer, canoeist, sea kayaker, rock climber, cyclist, and mountaineering instructor. She has for the past eight years been the outdoor gear columnist for AMC Outdoors magazine and is a frequent contributor to Backpacker magazine. Prior to producing "Anyplace Wild" David Getchell Jr. was the longtime equipment editor for Backpacker.

Commonsense advice for neophytes and seasoned boaters alike.

Out of all the boating books that I've read over the last few months, nothing comes close to matching Getchell's book.
It is replete with useful information that covers the entire gamut of outboard boating. For example, it was from this book that I learned about the advantages of a portable trailer lightbar. Furthermore, I used the guidelines he presented to make my own.
Experienced boaters may find some of the material a little too basic, but I'd wager that just about everyone will come away with a few pearls of wisdom.

Plain, outspoken, wonderfully opinionated and varied accounts of the what, how and where of small craft. For this blue water sailor and sea kayaker, Getchell's book is a bible. Even a non motor head could understand, and enjoy the 'how ' of operating, buying, cruising, and sleeping on and with a small outboard under twenty feet. This book has now been through too many hands and is worn.....

I have got more than 10 books on corrosion. Based on my experience working 17 years in an oil refinery as a maintenance engineer, project engineer, and head of inspection, this book is the best among all and has been very useful to me. It is well written and well-organized on all types of corrosion you find in real life and work. It is easy to read and understand and contains just all information you need to understand the mechanisms of corrosion you find in your plant equipment and can lead you the effective way to combat your corrosion problems. The price of this book is so low compared to other books I own, but it is the most valuable book on corrosion I have. This is just the only one you really need on corrosion!

I have a dog eared worn version printed in 1967 from when I took the Corrosin Engineering Course from Mars G Fontana. The book and knowledge have been priceless in the maintenance of my Chemical Engineering career. A number of time I have sent "experts" packing after showing them references to items such as interstitial stress cracking and the precipitation of chromium carbide near stainless steel welds. Put this book together with Peabody's Control of Pipeline Corrosion Handbook and an old version of the Betz water treatment handbook and you have coverage of nearly every corrosion control problem you might encounter .

The most insightful studies of cultural differences ever

I found this book to be of tremendous value. I have had some experience with different cultures -- Italian, French and East African. This book helped me understand all of them better, and gave me a much deeper understanding of the problems I had encountered.
Each of the cultural difference dimensions is based on real research -- not just a theoretical idea. Each of them is introduced with a telling anecdote, that is almost as powerful as the statistical study.
I found lots of new information here, lots of new understanding. Most amazing to me is the fact that relatively close cultures have profound differences -- such as France and Sweden. Also amazing is the fact that these differences are of extreme duration -- reaching back thousands of years.
The author recognizes the problems that these differences bring to business and politics in an international setting. There do not appear to be any easy answers.
I highly recommend this book!

Tough hardhitting heavy information to be slowly digested.

This is a slow read, but take heart, read it all and also read "Corporate Culture and Performance" by Kotter and Haskett. The tools for making your organization run smoother, more efficiently and be more fun to work in are documented here. It is not a cookbook of how-to's. It is the research report into how cultural differences underlay everything you want to accomplish. If you are in the international arena or have a diverse workforce you absolutely need to read this book.
Knowing the differences in cultures and how to use them to everyone advantage is critical to your company's success. Ignore this one at your own peril, because at least one of your competitors is starting to implement the knowledge already. We started using the information by the time I got through the second chapter. Our Executive Coaching business is highly successful in changing corporate culture to produce the maximum benefits and returns with the resources available to top management because we factor in these differences. This book has become an indispensable reference for several of our programs.

Through the course of reading the book i realized a few things (in fact a lot of things) that will help me work better in a global organization. Jay D. Helsel has worked more than 35 years in education, having served as a professor of applied engineering and technology courses, chairperson of the Department of Applied Engineering and Technology, and Vice President for Administration and Finance at California University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Helsel has had extensive experience teaching mechanical drafting at both the secondary and post-secondary levels and has worked in industry as well. He holds an undergraduate degree from California University of Pennsylvania, a master's degree from the Pennsylvania State University, and a doctoral degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Helsel is now a full-time writer and has authored publications such as Engineering Drawing and Design, Fundamentals of Engineering Drawing, Programmed Blueprint Reading, Computer-Aided Engineering Drawing, and Mechanical Drawing: Board and CAD Techniques, as well as various workbooks and other ancillary products associated with the above publications.

Complete Coverage of Classical Physics Fundamentals

I recently bought Schaum's Beginning Physics I and Beginning Physics II to refresh my basic classical physics. These volumes are almost perfect in the sequence in which the material is presented. And the depth is adequate for a solid foundation in classical physics if one is intending to move to a more in-depth study of a particular area of classical physics, such as mechanics, electromagnetism, optics or thermodynamics.

The only short comings are in that the material is mostly presented with a bare-bones explanation. If you are reviewing or using this along with a regular physics text, it should not be a problem. I don't think the author intended it to be a complete stand-alone course. This being the case, I still rate it as a Five Stars. But some of the passages and material will require that you read and re-read certain parts,,, AND think over what you've read. But physics is a difficult subject and if you really want to learn it, it will require work regardless of what ever resources you use.

The diagrams are complete and numerous to convey the material, but again, they quite often require several viewings and some careful thought. They are accurate, and that is what counts.

The aspect of these books that I found most admirable are the many sample problems and the presentation of the solutions,,, This is why I give the books an unqualified Five Stars. They are thorough, complete and cover every part of a general classical physics education. This is a non-calculus oriented presentation and to REALLY learn physics, you will at sometime need to learn the calculus. These books will prepare you to do so. If used with or just after a high school level algebra text you will be ready to take on teaching yourself calculus, the step should be easy.

The only thing that annoyed me with these books is they are very flimsy. Some of the pages come out when just using it in a normal way. But for the price that is not really an issue. So it's not carry-about friendly. But the coverage and accuracy makes up for that several times over. Complete coverage, and accuracy best describe these two volumes.

Keeps what it promises

A previous reviewer gave this book a bad rating because she/he was not pleased with the preview pages offered at Amazon. Actually the preview pages are ok - it just happens that the author is dedicating the first chapter to brush up the students math. The book holds what the author promises in the preface: "The book is specifically designed to allow students with relatively weak mathematics and science problem solving to quickly gain the needed quantitative reasoning skills as well as confidence in addressing the subjects in physics"
The book is designed to accompany first year college students. Price/Value ratio seems ok - and it blends in with the second part "Beginning Physics II" (which has received good ratings as well).

Truly excellent book for communication engineering students

Let me start by saying this book WILL NOT TEACH YOU Analog and Digital communication.
Like most Schaum's books it quickly scans over what you need to know.
That being said, this is truly an amazing book. I have used this book so often that I need to buy it again (newsprint pages).
There are so many example problems on AM/FM/PM, pulse shaping that you just have to understand it.
However the REAL POWER OF THIS BOOK starts at chapter 5. The entire chapter reviews basic Probability and Random Variables and gives around 50 worked out examples.
Chapter 6 is on Random Signals and Noise. Another excellent excellent EXCELLENT chapter. It covers (AUTO)CORRELATION, (AUTO)COVARIANCE, time averages, ensemble averages, Wide and Strict Sense Stationary, Power Spectral Densities from taking the Fourier transform of your autocorrelation function as well as 35 fully worked out problems.
Finally chapter 7 is on Performance in the presence of noise which very nicely wraps up the last 2 chapters with the first 4. AWGN channels with AM/FM/PM systems as well as optimum receivers and there are 32 worked out problems.
Chapter 8 is on information coding and covers everything from source, entropy, channel and error control coding.
In a nutshell this book fills in the blanks of 6 graduate level texts I have on the above subjects.
I highly recommend this book to any communication engineer, but don't forget that Schaum's books do not teach you the material, they simply apply it.

The Book Does Teach the Subject

Contrary to the other reviewers claim, this book does teach you the basics of analog and digital communications. Hwei P. Hsu explains the basic fundamental principles better than any text written. I believe strongly that if a person studies from this book, they will have a strong foundation of the subject matter. Also they will see the big picture as oppose to getting lost in details. If one learns the main principles and concepts, and study the worked out examples, they will be able to solve the problems in most texts. Hwei P. Hsu has three excellent books, Signals and Systems, Probabilty and Random Processes, and Analog and Digital Communications.

Great for reference

The Shaum's series are great for any student to use as additional study aids and for reference. I used this mostly for reference during some other classes as well. (Comunications thoery, Signal proceesing theory, etc) Don't expect it to teach you the topics from scratch, you must be vaguely familiar with the terminology and what to look for.
