Good introduction to Control Systems Analysis and Design.

This book is a good pratical introduction to control systems.It covers all the basic stuff like Bode and Nyquist diagrams,root locus and an introduction to state space design and analysis techniques.It is divided in modules which are (nearly) independent one from the other.The real strength is the very large number of solved clear exercises from which you can gain a lot of hints.While not a complete theory book(for this use "State Space and Input-Output Linear Systems" by Delchamps)it has a nice intuitive theoretical approach to many subjects.Also good for the beginning students are a lot of examples from basic mechanics and circuit theory.On the whole a good and engaging text for the newcomer to the control systems area.

I did a 4 year circumnavigation on my yacht (a 34 foot steel sloop)and jimmy Cornel "world cruising routes (3rd edition)" was my daily companion. It helped me a great lot to plan cruises and ocean passages. It allowed me to choose the right sailing areas at the right time. Engineering Circuit Analysis by Kemmerly and Hayt (third edition)is second to none. With it's clear and thorough mathematical coverage of circuits, a moderately intelligent student will get a solid grounding for most EE courses that follow. It also has chapters that cover everything you have to know about the mathematical derivation and circuit application of Fourier analysis, Fourier transforms, and Laplace transforms. The book is written for the student, and it's writing style is very helpful for both intuitive and mathematical understanding of all circuits and circuit related material covered. Containing just the right amount of humor, it is also enjoyable to read.

Lots of info with occasional poor definitions

This book gives a lot of information on circuit analysis techniques but some of the definitions are poor, especially with meshes and trees. Mesh loops actually are loops such that they cannot be formed with any of the other loops that were chose in the circuit. Also, their examples with RLC circuits give overly complicated methods of finding initial changes in inductor current or capacitor voltage. The book should show that an easy way to find initial changes in inductor current or capacitor voltage is to plug the initial inductor current or capacitor voltage into the nodal equation or loop equation that has been differentiated so that the change in inductor current or capacitor voltage is present in the equation.

What the Engineer Knows and the Technician Doesn't

This is not an easy book, and may stump those trying to use it
for self-study. Having said this, and with the proviso that you're
going to need some calculus, this could be the book for you.
This book contains the kind of information that the EE knows
and the ASET, and possibly the BSET, don't. This book can't
be read for pleasure. It requires careful and thorough study,
and working the exercises to test your understanding. But, if
you put forth the effort, you will be richly rewarded.

About the Author

Don Casey credits the around-the-world voyage of Robin Lee Graham, featured in National Geographic in the late 1960s, with opening his eyes to the world beyond the shoreline. After graduation from the University of Texas he moved to south Florida, where he began to spend virtually all his leisure time messing about in boats.

In 1983 he abandoned a career in banking to devote more time to cruising and writing. His work combining these two passions soon began to appear in many popular sailing and boating magazines. In 1986 he co-authored Sensible Cruising: The Thoreau Approach, an immediate best-seller and the book responsible for pushing many would-be cruisers over the horizon. He is also author of This Old Boat, a universally praised guide that has led thousands of boatowners through the process of turning a rundown production boat into a first-class yacht, and of Sailboat Refinishing, Sailboat Hull & Deck Repair, Canvaswork & Sail Repair, and Inspecting the Aging Sailboat, all part of the International Marine Sailboat Library. He continues to evaluate old and new products and methods, often trying them on his own 30-year-old, much-modified, Allied Seawind.

When not writing or off cruising, he can be found sailing on Florida's Biscayne Bay.

Lots of details in a small package

This is an excellent book for someone who knows nothing about fiberglass boat repair. It starts off with a brief discussion of the three major sealant types (polysulfide, polyurethane and silicone) and when to use each. Other sections cover the different types of resin, epoxy choices, etc. etc. Excellent information when trying to decide which of the gazillion products to purchase in the boating catalogs. Major sections include Leaks (finding and fixing, installing deck hardware), Restoring the Gloss (polishing and scratch repair), Deck Repairs (stress cracks, voids, nonskid surfaces, and teak decks), Laminate Repair (fiberglass layup, types of resins, epoxy), Core Problems (wet core, stiffening), Hull Repairs (gouges, blisters, impact damage), Keel and Rudder Damage (centerboard pivots, weeping keels, etc.) This little book is not afraid to tackle big projects--the Core Problems section for example shows the repair of a huge 2-foot diameter section of rotted core. The book makes it sound easy, but I'd rather not think about that much work. The section on gelcoat--what it is, how it is manufactured, and how to keep it looking good as long as possible--is by itself worth the price of the book.

2nd best book on Fiberglass repairs, and not just for sailboats

While I actually like "Fiberglass Repair: Polyester or Epoxy" by David and Zora Aiken a touch better than this book, they are both strong. They both have lots of clear ILLUSTRATIONS, which to my mind are preferable to photos at depicting this sort of information.

Blister repair (not addressed at all in older books on fiberglass repeair), wet deck cores, gelcoat cosmetics are all covered, as well as a good discussion of when to use Epoxy resins versus the cheaper Polyesters. I recommend this book for owners of ALL fiberglass boats, as the construction and repairs are quite universal.

The relatively large format of this book helps the clarity of the drawings, and makes it possible to imagine using it like a cookbook, propped open on the workbench as you step through the steps.

Just the facts

Style wise, this is the opposite of The Sailmaker's Apprentice by Marino. This is not a book to pick up while sitting by the fire sipping tea. It is a great reference book with concise "how to" information. I have a friend who told me that there is nothing beyand repair on a fiberglass boat. After reading this book, I'm beginning to belive him. Good explanations of both materials and techniques - including safety.

There is a lot more in Parking Spaces than you might think. It covers all the technical stuff, but is also full of ideas for making parking a better part of the city. I think that any serious firm should have this book.
