Crosby at his best

Philip B. Crosby died on August 18, 2001. Crosby was a quality expert, but he was much more.
This was the first business book that I ever read, and it is still my favorite. The following quote alone would be worth the price of the book:
"The successful situation manager is one who learns to establish the ground rules for success before launching himself into completing the job assigned to him. If nothing else, he must assure himself that he will know when he is finished. He must also decide what persons are involved in deciding he is finished, and supply them with the means to measure his progress."
"Much of the tragedy of modern life is wrapped up in the failure to accomplish those two basic steps . . ."
"You are going to be measured anyway by some means, fair or foul. Usually the one doing the measuring has nothing specific in mind; so he does it by the seat of his pants. Careers are destroyed in this manner. It is the situation equivalent to 'Let's have lunch sometime.' "
Rarely is career advice so well stated or so universally applicable.
In The Art of Getting Your Own Sweet Way (1972), Crosby writes:
"People are conditioned to believe that error is inevitable . . . However, we do not accept the same standard when it comes to our personal life. If we did, we would resign ourselves to being shortchanged now and then when we cash our paychecks. We would expect hospital nurses to drop a certain percentage of all newborn babies. We would expect to go home to the wrong house periodically. As individuals we do not tolerate these things. Thus we have a double standard, one for ourselves, one for the company."
The standard organizations needed was "Zero Defects":
In this book Crosby writes, "The Zero Defects concept is based on the fact that mistakes are caused by two things: lack of knowledge and lack of attention . . . Zero Defects is not a motivation method, it is a performance standard. And it is not just for production people; it is for everyone."
Though many wanted to join the quality bandwagon, Zero Defects was not always understood:
"I found people thinking that Zero Defects was a worker motivation program and blaming all the problems on the workers . . . Management is the bad guy . . . We are dealing with a new management philosophy, not a propaganda program."
However, the real focus of The Art of Getting Your Own Sweet Way is on situation management, not quality management. That makes the book useful to everyone since everyone has situations to manage.
The back of the book includes Crosby's trademark "Guidelines for Browsers." This feature is simply a list of loosely related sentences that reduce the key points of the book into slogans. Here are a few favorites:
"You have probably noticed that the world was not specifically designed for you."
"None of us is only one thing. We are a combination of many occupations, responsibilities and desires."
"Consistency wins, whether you want it to or not."
"Embarrassed kittens become tigers."
"Unless you get your kicks from an electric massage,, there is nothing things can do for you that people can't improve on."
"Dedication is wanting your thing to happen more than they don't want it to happen."
This book is now 30 years old and has been out of print for a long time. With Crosby gone, let us hope that the book will be re-issued at this point and not fade into oblivion. Maybe these few quotes will help generate some new interest in this work.

Oldie but goodie

This is an old book, published in 1981. I have just picked it up and started reading it. It is a great book for anyone facing uncertainty in their business or personal life. Crosby explains the concepts of Situation Management. His thoughts are timeless and will resonate with many readers in today's uncertain times. Example: Law #4: The Effectiveness of Any Program Depends upon the Amount of Participation Delegated". Think about it. Highly recommended book.

A 1972 Systems Programming Classic!

A set text for one of the second year computer science units I undertook in 1980, when I repeated second year taking computer science and physics, after the 'university authorities' had found my seven political club memberships meant I had only 59 points of credit units, rather then the requisite 60 to advance into third year mathematics, this text describes well the 1970's general purpose mainframe and then minicomputer operating system systems programming task set then agiven to amany a programming team to implement on Data General minis, DEC minis, Prime minis, Pyramid minis, Interdata minis, and the several dozen then available minicomputer brands would fight aplenty over market share in terms of system performance, operating system and compiler functionality, featuritis unlimited!

A very well rounded text if I may say so. Now that modern Linux systems have achieved the high standards of quality attained by the minicomputer generation that preceded the personal computer, the real question to ask is when will the Windows operating system achieve the quality of these 1970's systems, most particularly in terms of security keeping out the viruses that trash disk drives!

"An attempt has been made to keep the book as machine independent as possible;" In fact, many of the examples are illustrated by way of discussing the IBM 360/370 machines!

After a decade of gestation, original articles on the subject began to appear in America. Now, with the passing of the second decade, it is appropriate to attempt a consolidated story of some of the many efforts of European and American kinematicians. Conventional texts give an adequate presentation of the area of planar kinematic analysis. In these books, first contact is estab¬lished with fundamental concepts, and known planar mechanisms are investigated for the displacements, velocities, and accelera¬tions of their parts. In analysis, mechanisms are put on the psychiatrist's couch, so to speak, and are probed for their per¬formance traits. The important and complementary area, that called kinematic synthesis-where mechanisms are created to meet certain motion specifications-is touched upon only by a consideration of cams and possibly a glimpse of the simpler aspects of planar linkage synthesis. In the design of a mechanism for a given application, a decision must first be reached regarding the type of mechanism to be employed, as, for example, deciding between a cam or a linkage. The number of links and connections required to give the desired degree of freedom must then be determined. Finally, the required dimensions needed to bring about a particular motion must be deduced. In the broadest sense, kinematic synthesis thus consists of the three interrelated areas of type, number, and dimensional synthesis.

A very fine Introduction to Kinematic Pairs-n-Chains.

Splendid. A reader will need a solid engineering background, but if he or she's got it, then this should be redicuously easy reading.

From hinges to cylinders (sliders) to screws, the text reviews all the fundamental principle(s) unifying all these seemingly different mechanisms. The professonial term for this principle(s) is linkage; a bit more common one is joint. ...Double-Duo-Jointed...alright, alright, I just made up the DDJ term since that's the point in Kinematic Synthesis of Linkages: in other words, the theory of link creativity. How to link things up!

Actually, one of the more radical titles in the linkage body of literature is "How to draw a straight line," which describes the Peaucellier-Lipkin link. A mechanism once thought impossible.

About the Author
New Hampshire native Dennis Fisher has built and used all the instruments in this book, some during a recent cruise from New England to Bermuda and the Virgin Islands. A graduate of Maine's Colby College who has written about navigation for New England Coastal News, he runs a printing business when not at his workbench building traditional navigational instruments.

Nice projects, but not enough explaination

This has a good selection of projects, but I would have appreciated more detail on how and why the tools work and what is going on. It could use a bit more math and science. This is only useful in conjunction with other books on celestial navigation.

A Medieval Reenactor's Perspective

As a medieval reenactor with a nautical persona, I bought this book to get some information on navigational instruments used in the Middle Ages. This book is a gold mine of information on making and using traditional navigational instruments. Although some of the instruments do not fit into my time of interest (Western Europe 1066-1603), most do, and the instructions on making and using them are good. The historical information is spotty,and some information does not agree with other sources that I consider reliable, but this is not intended as a history book, and the information it DOES provide on construction and use fills in a lot of gaps in other sources. This is a must-have book if you want to know how to make and use medieval navigational instruments.
