The shy little turtle wants to keep his head inside his shell because he is shy. However, the turtle kept bumping into animals. Do you want to know how he gets over his shyness? Well it's for me to know and you to find out!

About the Author
Brig. Gen. Jerry W. Cook, USAFR, Ret., has been flying for more than thirty-eight years. After ten years in the U.S. Air Force, he left in 1967 to fly for Pan American World Airways. Cook flew for sixteen years with the Arkansas Air National Guard, retiring as a brigadier general in 1986. He lives in Little Rock, Arkansas, and is a corporate pilot for Stephens Group, Inc.

Another good description of a USAF pilot's Vietnam tours with lots of stick-and-rudder stories

The author makes a good description of his tours in Vietnam flying the Phabulous Phantom, telling his story from his personal point of view. You may disagree with some of his opinions, but at least he makes it clear that they are his and spares no praise nor punches to whom he thinks deserves them.

Overall it is an interesting story well told, although not much different from the dozen very similar ones already published - recommended.

One of the best of the genre

I've read "Once a Fighter Pilot" more than once, and greatly enjoyed it each time. It's an intriguing mix of stories about flying in Vietnam, flying at MacDill AFB while the F-4 was just becoming available, and many flight instructor tales. (And sometimes the flight instructor stories are scarier than the ones about flying in Vietnam!) He's opinionated, open, honest, and to the point.

I consider this to be in the top 5% of its genre because it covers such a broad area and does it well. There are perhaps better and/or more detailed autobiographies specifically about flying in Vietnam, but this one is one of the few which really covers Air Force life during the 60s. I also like the overall style, it's a series of short tales in chronological order rather than a more continuous work.

It's a fun read--you won't regret it.

One of the Great Aviation Books

Jerry Cook's "Once A Fighter Pilot" is one of the books that occupies a small section of my shelf reserved for truly extraordinary books written by pilots. Many fighter jocks are good at BFM, formation, gunnery, instrument flying, and other skills, but the ones who can evoke strong emotion through the written word are scarce. My military flying career is past, but this book takes me right back into the cockpit, in a way few books do.

This book is the real deal, folks.

Great Reference but not intended for study for a code exam

It is interesting to note that many of the reviewers have bashed this because they were attempting to use this as a study guide for a particular State's Electrician Exam. This book is not intended to be a Code Reference/Guide and is more of a "how it works" reference. As noted there are much better study guides out there for testing purposes. I highly recommend Stallcups Journeyman's workbook or the Master Electrician's workbook if you are wanting to pass the exam. I have taught Journeyman prep classes and used Stallcups and the appropriate edition of the NEC exclusively. Mike Holt's books are also good for exam preparation.

As for the using the index it should be clear after only a cursory examination that it is indexed by section and not by page. This does make it a bit more tedious to look up a particular subject but it is certainly not impossible or unusable.

As for some of the archaic information included- there are still two phase systems in existence, there are houses with knob & tube wiring, we still see 3 phase delta high leg systems, manual motor starters (the old "one arm bandits"), and so on. Just because these are not part of modern wiring methods/systems does not mean that they have ceased to exist altogether.

I have found this to be a great reference and have used it many times to resolve questions that I could find little or no information for anywhere else. It is not an exhaustive reference on any single subject but it is a great reference to give you an overview.

One other observation- Amazon apparently ties the reviews to the book title and not the edition. The reviews here are for previous editions and do not specifically address the 15th edition.

As for my background- I have been a master electrican for over 15 years, am a certified electrical inspector, certified instrument technician, and NETA certified testing technician.

A Gem, with caveats

This is an excellent, if dense read that bridges the gap between the science of electricity, and the practical matter of an Electrician's work. It will not fully explain the science of the topic, and it will certainly not teach you how to wire a house. It is a very good book if your question runs along the lines of "Why does it work that way?" Its treatment of Ohm's law and other fundamentals is particularly useful. That said, the index is a nightmare, the book is not organized by page number, and it contains some apocrypha.

A patchwork monster

Another motley McGraw-Hill product. First copyrighted in 1913. The author appears to have died prior to 1976, and the book has been maintained by hired help. Don't try to use this as a textbook; treat it as a reference only. You never really know whether some item is up to date or 50 or 80 years old. Examples: There is a lot of treatment of two-phase (yup, 90 degrees) power, including at 25 hertz, and of multi-kilovolt series incandescent streetlighting, plus knob and tube wiring. Also, it is stated that the highest radio frequency in use is 30 megahertz, whereas in reality we're up to 1,000 or 2,000 times that just now. This book is a curiousity; charming if you have the cash, but if you don't, maybe you should be getting something more coherent.

About the Author
Professor Whitbourne received her Ph. D. from Columbia University and has dual specializations in life-span developmental psychology and clinical psychology. She has taught at the State University of New York at Geneseo and the University of Rochester. At the University of Massachusetts, she received the University's Distinguished Teaching Award and the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher Award. In 2002, she received the Psi Chi Florence Denmark National Faculty Advisor Award and presented the Psi Chi Distinguished Lecture at the Eastern Psychological Association 2001 meeting. She is the Honors Coordinator in the Psychology Department and the Director of the Office of National Scholarship Advisement in Commonwealth Honors College. The author of fourteen books and over one hundred journal articles and book chapters, Professor Whitbourne is regarded as an expert in the field of personality development in adulthood and old age. She is currently the APA Council Representative of Division 20 of APA (Adult Development and Aging), having also served as Division 20 President. She is also a Fellow of Divisions 2 (Teaching of Psychology) and 12 (Clinical Psychology). Professor Whitbourne has developed nationally recognized approaches to technological innovations in teaching, and the web site she developed for her introductory psychology course was selected as a McGraw-Hill Web Cafe "Site of the Month."

Excellent!

This book is one of the texts used in the Abnormal Psychology (PSYC 4320) at East Tennessee State University. It is by far one of the best textbooks I have had. The layout is very easy to follow and all disorders are summed up in a box at the end of each chapter that list symptoms and diagnostic criteria. I took my study guide notes for all the tests straight from these boxes and passed the class with a 3.6 (on a 4.0 scale). Each chapter starts out with a story relevant to the disorders being discussed and at the end of the chapter you will find questions pertaining to the story designed to quiz you on what you have learned in the section.

The book kept my attention as I read each chapter and I was so impressed by it that I bought a copy of the book to keep as a personal reference after I finished the class.

Not your dry and dusty textbook!

This was required reading for my graduate level counseling diagnosis class and one of the few textbooks I really enjoyed reading. The material is fascinating and presented in a very clear format.

Abomination of the English language

I literally have never read a more convoluted, baffling book. The authors somehow find ways to relate extremely simple concepts as grammar puzzles that need to be decoded. Most of the book is written with a lifeless, bureaucratic passive voice that hides the information.

Nancy Drew, all the detectives on Law & Order, and the Hardy Boys would have a hard time finding the point of many of these sentences. In fact, what often happened to me was I would read the same sentence two or three times to figure out just what the book was trying to say, only to find that it was something so painfully obvious that I wondered if perhaps I had brain damage. This is a theme of this book: hiding ideas which should be simple to understand behind a curtain of unnecessary words and passive voice. For example, on page 28:

"Researchers trying to understand the specific mechanisms involved in models of genetic transmission have found it helpful to study measurable characteristics whose family patterns parallel the pattern of a disorder's inheritance, called biological markers."

Try saying that out loud without pausing for breath. Did you learn from it? I swear to god that's a direct quote it's too absurd to make up.

My advice to a friend trying to study from the same book was to read the book with a black marker to cross out all the unnecessary words or rewrite important material back to English from the pseudo-intellectual moon speak the authors use.

Can you imagine a family dinner with these people? I can:

Bobby: "Dad, can you pass the butter?"
Dad: "The butter which is sitting in an aforementioned position in close proximity to a glass of dairy product may be passed to an individual who desires more butter if the individual was able to organize his premises from clutter to a more hygienic environment."
Bobby: "Mom, do I have brain damage?"

Here's a surprisingly legible quote from the authors about disorganized speech in schizophrenics:

"Their language can be grossly distorted to the point of incomprehensibility."

If you want to learn abnormal psychology from this book you will first need a degree in cryptology. Second, don't panic! You have not suffered head trauma and you are not unintelligent. The book really is just that bad. If you enjoyed this book you might also like extremely dry Calculus textbooks.

I have a nagging suspicion that all the 5 star reviews are from the author's coworkers, peers, or family members. Or maybe the publishers hired them. Or maybe they're too afraid of sounding stupid to admit that they didn't understand a single word on the first pass. Regardless, I cannot believe anyone would expect students to try to learn the subject from this gibberish. It will drive you to drink.
