DSP book review

This book is mostly composed of formulas and math. It gives little background information on the reasons/motivations for the formulas. I would not recommend this if you are new to digital signal processing.

Great Companion

This text was recommended as a companion to Oppenheim's "Discrete Time Signal Processing" for a senior DSP filtering course. If your school is like mine, you sit in three hours of lecture a week, nodding and agreeing and feeling like DSP is straightforward and intuitive. Then you sit down to do your homework and wonder, "where did this come from?" Schaum's helps to bridge this gap with compartmentalized topics and numerous examples. The sections help you quickly ascertain how the notation translates and how thoroughly the topic is covered relative to the coursework. The examples help because, let's face it, it helps to see certain types of problems worked through from start to finish. There are many, many examples within the sections and at the end of the sections, worked through in minute detail. If you're into or studying DSP as a senior engineering student, if you're not the top dog in your class but still want to do well, if you learn from examples and from working through many problems that you're able to confirm, then this book is for you. If you're looking for a "solutions manual" type of book, if you want a "cliff notes" type companion, or if you don't understand lecture concepts at all, then this book won't help you much. It's not an introductory text, although it covers introductory concepts, in my opinion there's not enough background on the rudimentary DSP topics to truly qualify as introductory.

Good as a refresher or supplemental text in DSP

This outline could never stand alone as a DSP tutorial, but it is excellent if you need extra problems to solve or if you need a refresher course in elementary DSP topics. Chapter one starts where any DSP course usually starts - with a quick review of signals and systems. Chapter two is on Fourier analysis and discusses all of the basics including the concept of filtering, interconnection of systems, and finally the discrete time Fourier transform and its properties. Chapter 3 is on sampling, and includes a good discussion of analog to digital conversion and how it can induce aliasing. Next the converse, digital to analog conversion, is discussed as well as discrete time processing of continuous signals and finally sample rate conversion. Chapter 3 is especially useful, since most DSP texts do not go into as much detail on practical A/D and D/A conversion topics as this chapter does. Chapter four finally gets into the z-transform - its definition, its properties, and its inverse. Chapter 5 is about the transform analysis of systems and specifically how the z transform makes the analysis of such systems much simpler than what was done in earlier chapters. Chapter six discusses the discrete Fourier transform, which is a finite-series version of the DTFT, which was discussed in chapter two. Because the Discrete Fourier Transform has a time complexity of NxN, the next chapter discusses its more practical alternative the Fast Fourier Transform, which has an NlogN time complexity. This might seem trivial at first, but if you are filtering 1Kx1K pixel images, the difference becomes significant. Although this chapter is very brief, it does a pretty good job of driving home the main points of the algorithm. Also, it has some pretty good exercises on the FFT, which are usually hard to find in textbooks. Now that all of the groundwork has been laid, chapter eight discusses the implementation of discrete time systems, which is the essence of DSP. Common filter structures are introduced. Chapter 9, the final chapter, is on filter design. Both IIR and FIR filter techniques are introduced. Thus, if you are in an advanced DSP course, this outline will probably be too elementary for you. For first semester students, this should be a very helpful outline for transitioning from the study of linear systems to DSP.

Complete but dense

As a medical student I find the most complete books to be the most helpful; nothing is more painful than being asked a question by some physician to which you don't know the answer. G&G offers a well laid out and thoughtfully constructed format for learning about mechanisms of action, adverse reactions, et al; but it's extremely dense. NOT appropriate for board studying but great for a pharmacology course. I would recommend the Lange pharm series as well for any med student taking pharm.

Essential for the Pharmacology Part of the Boards!

This pharmacology book is solely responsible for my honors grades in pharmacology and on the national boards.
All topics are covered comprehensively, with far greater clinical application than most pharmacology texts.
The chapter organization makes sense, and it is well indexed. This was one of the few med school books I kept and used for years after leaving clinical medicine to go into research.
I used the book for researching medications for family and myself - information on side effects and interactions was very good.
There are almost no illustrations, and few charts, so it's not easy reading, but it is definitely worthwhile.

The Good and the Bad

The Good:

- A nice amout of examples.

- Whatever is explained is explained pretty well.

- Friendly style of writing.

The Bad:

- No solution manual.

- Some mistakes in the solved examples.

The Worst:

- There is no focus on the heat transfer sceince itself - the equations are "dumped" on you with no explanations/development or even some example experiments that were made to get to the equations. The focus is on application of the equations to engineering problems and methods of solving differential equations.

The bottom line:

This book will not give you an understanding of the heat transfer science, but the ability to solve heat transfer problems. If that's what you look for - this is your book. Otherwise, look for something else.

A League of Its Own

In Holman's (the author) spirit I'll keep this simple. This text (along with Moran/Shapiro's introductory text in thermodynamics) is among the best textbooks met during the course of a civil, aerospace or mechanical enginnering study. The language used constitutes what should be an "industrial standard" for engineering textbooks. It keeps the level of attention peaking by avoiding loose talk and wordy explanations where this is not required. This is (academic) litterature in its truest sense. I own about 50 science/engineering texts within fluid mechanics, solid mechanics/dynamics, mathematics, physics and more. Among these, this book is top three - no small feat.

I HATE THIS STUPID BOOK

I hate this book, all the figures it refers to are on a different page, so you have to be flipping to and fro while you're reading in order to see the figure they're talking about, only to find out you still don't understand. I wish someone would come up with a good Heat Transfer book for Chemical Engineers. There are many gramatical errors in this book, and on the problem sets, and one of the tables in the back lists values of Cp under a Cv label. Ugh. Many mistakes, mediocre figures. There should be more pictures of real-life heat exchangers so students can picture whatever the author is talking about. If I ever learn or pass this class, it'll be because of my excellent professor, not because of this black and blue book. I can't wait to soak it in gas and set it on FIRE.

About the Author
Eliot W. Goldstein, AIA, an award-winning architect and specialist in timber design, is a partner with The Goldstein Partnership of West Orange, New Jersey. Called "one of the top 25 newsmakers of 1995" by Engineering News-Record for his work with timber structures, he has designed numerous large public structures, including the timber-trussed Montville Township Public Library, which Engineering News-Record said "set a new standard for heavy timber structure as architecture ... and produced an instant landmark." Robert Lyman (Ben) Brungraber, Ph.D., P.E. (Chapter 7, Traditional Joinery), is a manager/part-owner of Benson Woodworking Co., Inc., in Alstead Center, New Hampshire, a firm that has designed and built some of the most prominent heavy timber frame structures in the United States, including more than 30 large, public projects. He has also repaired both the oldest and the longest covered bridges in Pennsylvania. Phillip C. Pierce, P.E. (Chapter 15, Covered Bridges), a recognized structural and design engineer, has led over 100 bridge design/rehabilitation projects and more than 1000 bridge inspection/evaluations, mostly in the northeastern United States. He is the author of several papers, and a popular public speaker about wooden bridges. He lives in Binghamton, New York. Fred Severud, P.E. (Chapter 9, Lateral Bracing) is a design engineer and former head of Severud Associates in New York City. He was in charge of the structural design team on the Blue Cross Headquarters, a 50-story office building in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and on the Madison Square Garden renovation in New York City, among many other outstanding projects. He is now an adjunct associate professor of civil engineering at the University of Missouri, Rolla. He lives in nearby Salem, Missouri. Stephen Smulski, Ph.D. (Chapter 3, Preventing Wood Degradation), is a consulting wood scientist and president/owner of Wood Science Specialists Inc., of Shutesbury, Massachusetts. A Delightful Introduction to Modern Timber Structures

Each chapter in this book illustrates some aspect of modern timber engineering. The early chapters introduce the reader to the basic properties of wood. From then on, the reader is treated to subjects such as the depredations of termites, wood construction and fire safety, the value and limitations of mechanical connectors, the use of timber trusses, the earthquake resistance of wooden structures, and the value of shop drawings in construction.

The branch-trunk junctions of living trees are an example of moment-resistant joints (Chapter 2, page 13 therein). A good tutorial on the flexure of a beam is provided in Chapter 5 (pp. 15-16 therein). A simple model, consisting of sheets of paper, illustrates how the layers of the beam variously go into compression, tension, and/or shear.

There is a chapter (Chapter 7) on traditional joinery, written by Ben Brungraber. The main focus is on mortise-tenon joinery. Chapter 15 discusses covered timber bridges, notably the Town lattice trusses. There is also information about a video on the construction of a modern Town-lattice-truss covered bridge. I have seen this video, and found it quite fascinating.

This is not an engineering book. There are only a few sections that are quantitative, and the mathematics used is straightforward and well-described.

Good illustrations and very detailed. But there are some typographical errors which I am sure the typist does not realize, but it makes the math faulty. You have to pay attention.

This is a nice book for someone who is interested in the major construction of buildings with timbers. This is really geared towards architects and is a textbook, yet easy to read.

Troubleshooting and Repairing Color Television Systems

I suspect Mr. Goodman is a technical writer rather than an engineer. He is writing to a technician with a shop full of expensive instruments and a certain amount of experience using that equipment. If that were me, I think I would have found the book more useful. His lack of theoretical understanding and explanation did not convey to me the kind of basic reasoning I wanted to help solve real problems, without that shop full of expensive instruments.

Got what I paid for

Book wasn't in the condition I expected. I did expect some highlighting and bent pages, however the front cover is completely bent and near destroyed, almost half of it having been ripped off or hanging off. But I got it for a very cheap price and I am happy that I didn't have to spend more money. I just wished they had stated in the details of the product that the cover was so damaged. I might have picked a copy that was in better condition...
