About the Author
A Professor of Accounting at Cornell University, Professor Hilton teaches in the areas of managerial accounting and cost management systems. With bachelor's and master's degrees in accounting from The Pennsylvania State University, he received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. A Cornell faculty member since 1977, Professor Hilton also has taught accounting at Ohio State and the University of Florida, where he held the position of Walter J. Matherly Professor of Accounting. Prior to pursuing his doctoral studies, Hilton worked for Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Company and served as an officer in the United States Air Force. Professor Hilton is a member of the Institute of Management Accountants and has been active in the American Accounting Association. He has served as associate editor of The Accounting Review and as a member of its editorial board. Hilton also has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Management Accounting Research. He has been a member of the resident faculties of both the Doctoral Consortium and the New Faculty Consortium sponsored by the American Accounting Association. With wide-ranging research interests, Hilton has published articles in many -journals, including the Journal of Accounting Research, The Accounting Review, -Management Science, Decision Sciences, The Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Contemporary Accounting Research, and the Journal of Mathematical Psychology. Author of Managerial Accounting, he also has published a monograph in the AAA Studies in Accounting Research series, is a co-author of Budgeting: Profit Planning and Control, and is a co-author of Cost Accounting: Concepts and Mana-ge-rial Applications. Professor Hilton's current research interests focus on contemporary cost management systems and international issues in managerial accounting. In recent years, he has toured manufacturing facilities and consulted with practicing managerial accountants in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

I ordered this book for a graduate level managerial accounting course. Prior to this course, I had always been horrible at trying to decipher the steps in accounting. Needless to say, this text broke the information down in layman's terms, and I got an 'A' in the course. I was going to resell this text, but I think I may just keep it on hand for future reference.

Best neural network textbook for beginners

This is definitely a must read for all NN beginners. In my opinion, this book is very well organized. First, it puts theoretical stuff and applicaiton examples into separate parts (Part I&II). Second, in Part I, it starts with basic constituents of NNs: one neuron NN, activation fucntion, learning rule,...and then covers NNs of more large-scale types. Within each type, it describes the most rudementary or prototype NN first, supplements info regarding other variants next, and mentions the issues to be encountered for actual implemention. This all makes this book so easy to follow. I can quickily decide whether I can skip the coming section/subsection and no worry of discontinuity as I read along.

I strongly recommend this text for beginners and graduate students who want to understand Neural Networks. First, the text book explains the why, where, and how to apply Neural Networks, which is the most important point for understanding Neural Networks. Second, mathematical proofs, clear description of algorithms and MATLAB codes encourage me to do it myself. And a lot of mathematical foundation in the Appendix allow me to understand quite easily complex mathematical concepts.

I strongly recommend this text for beginners and graduate students who want to understand Neural Networks. First, the text book explains the why, where, and how to apply Neural Networks, which is the most important point for understanding Neural Networks. Second, mathematical proofs, clear description of algorithms and MATLAB codes encourage me to do it myself. And a lot of mathematical foundation in the Appendix allow me to understand quite easily complex mathematical concepts.

More than a typical textbook

As an instructor, I want to point out something that I consider a huge plus to Experience History, and that is its connection to an online system called "Learn Smart." Learn Smart is a quizzing system that instructors can use in a variety of ways to enhance student learning. It provides a series of quizzes for the student to take for each chapter that allow both the student and the instructor see how well the student is "getting" the material. I used the quizzes in a way that allowed students to retake them until mastering them, but what is really special is that the system gauges the student's level of preparedness and reacts to it. For example, if a student understands questions and gets them correct, the system asks progressively more challenging questions. On the other hand, if the student is having trouble with the material, the system continues to ask lower-level questions until the student starts to master the material, at which point it eases into more difficult questions. If the student continually misses questions about a specific term or concept, Learn Smart will eventually tell the student to go back and read and will provide the page numbers. This encourages students to read the text until they understand the material. My students really liked Learn Smart. In fact, one student had to take another instructor for 1302 because of scheduling limitations, and she asked me "But what if they don't do Learn Smart? How am I supposed to learn this stuff without Learn Smart?" While I used the program in this way, it could also be used to provide the actual tests for the course. The possiblities are very impressive.

Father Roland Guérin de Vaux (1903-1971) was a French Dominican priest who led the Catholic team that initially worked on the Dead Sea Scrolls. He was the director of the Ecole Biblique, a French Catholic Theological School in East Jerusalem, and he was charged with overseeing research on the scrolls. His team excavated the ancient site of Khirbet Qumran (1951–1956) as well as several caves near Qumran northwest of the Dead Sea. The accompanying volume to this book is Ancient Israel: Religious Institutions.

He wrote in the Preface to this 1957 book, “the institutions of Israel have usually been studied as part of a larger whole… it has been felt that Old Testament institutions could well form the subject of a special study. For this the main source is evidently the Bible itself… the Bible does not treat directly of these questions, but the historical, prophetical and wisdom books contain much information, all the more interesting because it tells us what actually did happen and not what ought to have happened. To make use of all these texts calls for accurate exegesis, and before we can draw conclusions, literary criticism must assign dates to the various passages, for the development of institutions followed the course of history… The present book offers only the conclusions of all this research… In the study of the Old Testament itself, institutions occupy a subordinate place, and the reader may sometimes feel that he is very far from the spiritual and doctrinal message he seeks for in the Bible. Nevertheless, he is always on the border-land of biblical religion, and often in direct contact with the message it enshrines… the Word of God is a living thing, and a man is better able to hear its tones if he listens to it in the actual surroundings in which it was first given to mankind.”

He notes, “It is clear, that the most common form of marriage in Israel was monogamy. It is noteworthy that the books of Samuel and Kings, which cover the entire period of the monarchy, do not record a single case of bigamy among commoners (except that of Samuel’s father, at the very beginning of the period). The Wisdom books, too, which provide a picture of society in their age, never mention polygamy.” (Pg. 25) Later, he adds, “In a society which tolerated polygamy, the possession of a large harem was a mark of wealth and power. It was also a luxury which few could afford, and it became the privilege of kings. Saul had at least one concubine… and elsewhere there is mention of his ‘wives’… Even when David was reigning only in Hebron, he already had six wives… and in Jerusalem he took more concubines and wives… The ‘king’ in the Song of Songs has sixty queens and eighty concubines… Whatever we may think … Dt. 17:17 had good cause to warn the king against possessing too large a harem.” (Pg. 115)

He says of the status of women, “the wife of an Israelite was by no means on the level of a slave. A man could sell his slaves or even his daughter (Ex 21:7), but he could never sell his wife, even though he had acquired her as a captive in war (Dt 21:1). The husband could divorce his wife, but she was protected by the letter of repudiation, which restored her freedom… The social and legal position of an Israelite wife was, however, inferior to the position a wife occupied in the great countries round about. In Egypt the wife was often the head of the family, with all the rights such a position entailed. In Babylon she could acquire property, take legal action, be a party to contracts, and she even had a certain share in her husband’s inheritance.” (Pg. 40)

Of slaves, he said, “In everyday life the lot of a slave depended largely on the character of his master, but it was usually tolerable. In a community which attached such importance to the family, in which work was scarcely conceivable outside the framework of the family, a man on his own was without protection or means of support. The slave was at least assured of the necessities of life. More than that, he really formed part of the family, he was a ‘domestic’ in the original sense of the word… He joined in the family worship, rested on the Sabbath… shared in the sacrificial meals, and in the celebration of religious feasts… including the Passover… from which the visitor and the wage-earner were excluded… He could share in his master’s inheritance.” (Pg. 85)

He comments on the Jubilee year in Leviticus 25, “The practical application of this law seems to encounter insuperable obstacles. Unless we arbitrarily suppose… that the fiftieth year was really was really the forty-ninth, the last of the sabbatical years… Secondly, the directions on the redemption or liberation of the slaves would be ineffective in themselves and are in contradiction to the law of the sabbatical year, which provides for their liberation every seventh year… one may advance the hypothesis that the Law of Jubilee was a late and ineffective attempt to make the sabbatical law more stringent by extending it to landed property, and at the same time to make it easier to observe, by spacing out the years of remission. It was inspired by ancient ideas, and made use of the framework of an archaic calendar…. But it was a Utopian law and it remained a dead letter.” (Pg. 175-177)

This 267 page book by Father Roland (yes He,s a priest) as well as director of a Bible institute and an archaeologist is a very detailed account of how Israel lived their common lives,family,marriage,death,slavery,royal household,finance,and so much more.He draws info from various sources including the Bible which may or may not be accurate including the apocrypha.Interesting stuff but more of a textbook than an easy read.Four kinds of index,s in the back plus many references to other books for those who want to pursue further detailed knowledge.His Catholic roots do not display themselves too often in this book but there is a definite slant to the book.I bought it for how the Jews got engaged and married,outside the Bible wisdom---quite different that here in liberal America--Got some questions answered about this,for example all Jews have a civil ceremony since their state religion is Judiasm,services are all the same across this tiny country.Be forewarned,this book is very detailed,small print and detailed--ps---have a dictionary handy.

EXCELLENT REFERENCE BOOK

I have used this book throughout 2 years of medical school and it is one of the best dermatology references I have come across. It has also been a quick review for the the path seen with derm since the pictures are so clear and give a good representation of the path. An easy book to skim through before boards as well.

WELL-RESEARCHED, WELL-DOCUMENTED

Shinning like a king's armour, the colours and synopses of this atlas made a thorough analysis of skin diseases.
Any medical student or practioner who needs a dermatological companion would find a reliable one in this atlas. The uncountable pictures, which featured in this new edition are both illustrative and descriptive. Everything about the book indicates sound research and documentation, (on the part of its authors). It is a superlative tool for both doctors and students: the type of book many people would like to keep as CD-ROMs.

An Excellent Dermatology Reference!

As a non-specialist health care provider, I continually see lesions of all types on peoples faces, and have always wanted an affordable dermatology reference to help me in assessing the risk associated with these lesions. This text is everything I wanted, and then some. The text provides excellent, detailed diagnostic/background information to accompany the wonderful full color pictures, and is organized according to the type of lesion and underlying etiology. At 1,040 pages, it appears to cover the most important and common skin conditions seen. I expect it to become an often used reference in my practice. This text will help me decide when to refer a patient for further evaluation. I wonder how such a great reference can be produced at this price, as most of my other texts are much more expensive. If you are looking for this type of text, I don't think you can lose with this one. The text I have reviewed is the fourth edition, copyright 2001.
