The "Bible" of General Practice

The best edition of Murtagh's classic general practice texbook yet! So many colour photos and pictures, hardcover, and basically all you need to know about GP. If you could pinpoint why Murtagh is so good at what he does is because he tells it like it is and in the simplest way possible. My GP training supervisor, who is a regular RACGP examiner, has advised I read this and possibly only this to pass my RACGP (Royal Australian College of General Practice) fellowship exams next year.
Murtagh's method is simple and effective: What is the most likely condition based on probability? What are the "red flags"? What conditions are not to be missed (and should be excluded regardless of how unlikely they are)? What are the 7 conditions this presentation could be masquerading? ...
Some colleagues have said that the downside to this book is that it doesn't go into enough detail about certain conditions. True, some conditions will have but a few sentences of text dedicated to it - but generally this is when the condition is one that needs to be referred to a specialist. And yes, Murtagh tells you when you, as a GP, should refer! The premise is to be a book dedicated to the knowledge and skill of general practice, not distinctly to pathophysiology or the specialist treatment required for particular conditions. As a general practitioner it is sufficient to know when a certain symptom or investigation finding requires referral to a surgeon, not to specifically know how to perform the surgical procedure. To some non-GP doctors this seems too "shallow" a medical field, but consider also the breadth of conditions that a single practitioner must be versed in and you'll understand why you can't be an expert in everything.
