About the Author
Rudolf F. Graf has 45 years of engineering, sales, and marketing experience in the electronics field. He has written more than 30 books (about three million copies printed)and well over 100 articles. He is a senior member of the IEEE, a licensed amateur radio operator (KA2CWL), and has a BSEE degree from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and an MBA from NYU. He is self-employed.

William Sheets is a self-employed circuit design engineer. He has more than 25 years of experience in RF, analog, and digital electronics. He has written numerous articles in electronics publications and co-authored five books with Graf. His interests include amateur radio (K2MQJ), photography, and travel. He has designed and built numerous items, including a satellite TV system, many transmitters and receivers, and a computer. He has an MEE degree from NYU, is married, and lives in up-state New York.

Perhaps I can help

This series contains thousands of schematics from a variety of sources. I'm quite sure that few, if any, were tested by the authors. However, based on the sources, most probably were tested by the originators. The explanations were sparse, and there were errors, some obvious. As such, these are probably not suitable for beginners. However, I find them to be very valuable, and I suspect that many experienced techs, engineers, hobbiests, and experimenters will as well. I often use part of one circuit as the seed of an idea for a circuit I am designing, with the end result bearing little resemblance to the original. These are filled with perhaps the most valuable of all resources - other people's ideas. I do wish the authors had been more careful to catch errors.

FOrgive the Author he knows not what to do

After puchasing volumes 1-6 as a group and testing some of the circuits I spent many hours correcting the mistakes and errors in these circuits. I threw the books into the closet and designed from scratch my own circuits, it took far less time and they work when I'm done. I wish you could hold the authors accountable for lost time I could hire a design staff larger than Microsoft.

One Step Above Paperweight or Doorstop

I already had Vol 1. of this series from decades ago. I thought the author had maybe improved the content and accuracy of his books. Sadly mistaken. Schematic diagrams are routinely missing values for parts or lacking important information. I have been in electronics for several decades and I again am greatly disappointed with lack of quality. I don't know if the author received permission to reprint these circuits on the condition he left out part values or what. For the money your better off somewhere else. Large voume of circuits diminished by poor quality of information.

Great supplement for exam prep

I used this book as a supplement for a course in Physical Optics, mainly to get practice in solving problems. I found the chapters on Polarization and Diffraction very useful. This book helped me get a better grade in this course. This book does not cover the topics like Jones and Coherence Matrix and Stokes vector. However these topics are covered well in the same author's Optics text. BTW, The Optics text is also very good. Solving problems in this book and then approaching the text gives a much better understanding of Optics. This book does not cover Poincare' sphere, which is also an important topic for which we cant find material anywhere except our Professor's lecture notes. Overall, this book is a must if you are taking any Optics course or the GRE physics text or if you just want to master the basics of Optics.

Clear concise outline of optics

This Schaum's outline is better than the expensive textbook by the same author on the same subject in many ways, and in my opinion stands alone as a guide on optics. It gets to the meat of optics via solving problems that range from simple to difficult, which is particularly attractive to engineers learning or reviewing this subject. To me, the only chapters that seemed a bit confusing were the first two on wave motion and on electromagnetic waves and photons. For that material you may need to consult another source. From that point onward, however, the outline couldn't be any better. The outline even has a chapter that introduces Fourier optics. This outline would make an excellent review or supplement for someone taking a course in Photonics that uses Saleh's "Fundamentals of Photonics". That textbook has virtually no solved problems in it whatsoever, and the first third of the book follows the material covered in this outline nicely.

Hecht is one of the premier instructors and authors on the subject of optics and his contribution to Schaum's is no exception! I used this book to teach myself the fundamental's of optics while working in an applied physics laboratory. Very clearly presented material

A good text for an introductory course in American government. The authors pack a surprising amount of information into each of their chapters. While this text needs to be supplemented for use at the college level, it provides a very good framework and is quite well-organized. For the price, it is a very good value

This was an excellent study guide for the CLEP subject exam. It covered all subjects on the exam in a concise manner, easy to understand, not too wordy, yet complete. Also, a great value. Gives a good basic understanding of American Government.

About the Author
Alberto Leon-Garcia is a Professor in the Depatment of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toranto where he holds the Jeffrey Skoll Chair in Computer Network and Innovation. He was also Chief Technical Officer and Co-Founder of Accelight Networks Inc. where he led the development of a terabit multiservice optical switch. In 1999 Dr. Leon-Garcia became an IEEE fellow for "for Contribution to multiplexing and switching of Integrated Service traffic." Inra Widjaja received his Ph.D degree in electrical engineering on high-speed packet switching architectures from the uiversity of Toronto in 1992. Since 2001 he has been a researcher at Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies. Dr.Widjaja's current research interests include traffic Engineering, architectures for cost effective tranport networks, and High-Speed packet Switching. He has Extensive publication in technical journals and high-Speed packet Switching. He has an Extensive Publication in technical Journals and Conferences and holds several patents in Switching architectures. He is also an active member of IETF and IEEE.

Full of Mistakes and Poorly Organized
By A Customer
After having taken a course, then later helped teach a course (University level) using this book I found that it is full of mistakes and difficult to read. Not recommended as an introductory text. The book may serve acceptably as an reference, but it is not a great teaching tool.
Instructors take notice that the electronic solutions to the problem sets have many errors. There are also many errors not acknowledged in the book's errata. (Errata hasn't been updated for 1 year).

(July 10, 1998) Reviewer: A reader from Minneapolis, MN I was looking for a book that would teach me enough about the current technology in electronic component packaging and multilayer PCBs that I wouldn't feel like a fool working with manufacturing engineers, PCB layout people, PCB manufacturers, and assemblers. I think I learned quite a bit; now people think I have years of experience with these technologies. I really like the format. Each chapter in this book is written by a different person: there are people from HP, TI, IBM, Motorola and dozens of others that offer theory and practical knowledge. I think this book is quite useful, but I also think two things are necessary to make it work: (1) moderate electronics/PCB background and (2) a more experienced co-worker who can answer any questions that you have. The best and most up to date book of its kind. (April 5, 1997) Reviewer: A reader This book is a must for any engeneering department involved in printed circuit board design as well as production engineering, quality engineering,etc. It is the most comprehensive book of its kind that I have seen. The new edition includes leading and bleeding edge technologies and goes into great detail. This is not a basics book. About the Author
Clyde F. Coombs Jr., is one of the best-selling editors in professional publishing. He developed and edited four editions of the Printed Circuits Handbook, the Electronic Instrument Handbook, the Communications and Network Test and Measurement Handbook, three of McGraw-Hill’s top-selling technical handbooks.
