This is truly an amazing work, which shows so many models of labor market phenomena at the undergraduate level that an undergraduate's economics education is incomplete without it. This book is essential reading for both undergraduates and policymakers who want to learn labor economics, economics in general, or have a deeper understanding of public policy issues. The best features are its unmatched explanations of human capital models, labor market discrimination models, and labor union models -- which will change the way you think of these issues and give deeper understanding. The book is both concise, deep, a quick and fun read, and makes Nobel-prize winning material accessible to any undergraduate or policy maker.

I teach Labor Economics and this is the best text on the market. A study guide with extra problems would be helpful. Note that critical reviews are about delivery, condition and customer service when using 3rd party sellers. The text itself is excellent.

This was a good textbook for labor economics, very accessible. It describes the theory in good detail then goes on to give examples of what happens in the real world. If I wasn't buying for class, I would still have bought an earlier edition.

SOME GOOD INFORMATION BUT A MIXED BAG

If your looking for a book jam packed with practical piloting techniques only don't buy the book. At the same time it mostly sticks to title and subtitle. I would give it three and one half stars if there was that option. The book does contain useful information with a broad range of topics from practical information such as landing technique to reasons to be skeptical of the FAA. I will keep the book around to reread.

Excellent first person reference book.

This book is a collection of first person accounts of various pioneers and "mountain men." Written in their own words, the stories lose a good deal of the varnish applied by authors of history books. Some of the accounts weren't edited for grammar, punctuation, or spelling. Although, at times, this makes for difficult reading (interpretting), it does help the reader envision the person behind the story. If you are a student of history, interested in the "mountain man" era, or just enjoy good outdoor adventure stories, I could not recommend this book more highly.

Still one of the best textbooks in Chemical Engineering Process Design.

Process Design is the "capstone" course in the chemical engineering curriculum. It used to be divided into Equipment Design and Plant Design. With the publication of Rudd and Watson's "Process Engineering Strategy" in 1968, it was recognized that it's principles can be taught and not "just has to be learned later" by a chemical engineer in his career. This book by Douglas was published in 1988 but has stood the test of time and is still a popular book in Process Design. Although it does not cover new subjects such as "product design", "plant-wide controllability", or "green engineering", it covers the basics very well. The book's blue dustcover says it all, conceptual design is "back-of-the-envelope" process design.

About the Author
Born in New York City, Robert Barro moved to Los Angeles, where he studied undergraduate physics at Caltech, including classes from the famous Richard Feynman. He changed his focus to economics for graduate school at Harvard University. Dr. Barro returned to Harvard as a professor in 1987. He recently served as president of the Western Economic Association and vice president of the American Economic Association. In addition to academic research, Professor Barro is an accomplished writer for the popular press. He worked as a viewpoint columnist for BUSINESSWEEK from 1998 to 2006 and contributing editor of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL from 1991 to 1998.

A good introduction to Perry and his battles

Oliver Hazard Perry is a true American naval hero who changed the course of our nation's history and seems to have been forgotten. How is this possible?? The book floats between a shallow biography of Perry and a good description of the his battles in and around Lake Erie during the War of 1812. Perry's historic battle with the British fleet on Lake Erie is well told and this section alone makes the book worthwhile. This an easy read once you become aware of the author's annoying habit of referring to new characters as if they had been previously introduced in the story. The book shines as an introduction to this little known period of American history, but before I had finished, I knew that I would be looking for a more substantial text on Perry and his role in the War of 1812.

The U.S. Navy Saves The Day (Again)

How much can one man accomplish when it seems that the forces nature and bureaucracy are allied against him?

Sent to build and man a fleet to protect the border country along the Great Lakes with almost no help from his superiors who were complacent at best and incompetent at worst, Oliver Hazard Perry accomplished his task and helped defeat the British in what was an incredible feat of arms. Commodore Perry is truly one of the most amazing men in all of naval history.

The Great Lakes campaigns of the War Of 1812 aren't really addressed in school and it is a shame. There was more to the war than Fort McHenry and the Battle of New Orleans.

This book is well written and very inspiring. You can't help but get the impression that Commodore Perry would have been an awesome businessman in today's world.

Rich in detail and lively in verbiage, this book is hard to put down. In Navy Basic Training I had been taught that here was a man to admire. Read this book and discover greatness.

Good introduction to Control Systems Analysis and Design.

This book is a good pratical introduction to control systems.It covers all the basic stuff like Bode and Nyquist diagrams,root locus and an introduction to state space design and analysis techniques.It is divided in modules which are (nearly) independent one from the other.The real strength is the very large number of solved clear exercises from which you can gain a lot of hints.While not a complete theory book(for this use "State Space and Input-Output Linear Systems" by Delchamps)it has a nice intuitive theoretical approach to many subjects.Also good for the beginning students are a lot of examples from basic mechanics and circuit theory.On the whole a good and engaging text for the newcomer to the control systems area.

The Best

Engineering Circuit Analysis by Kemmerly and Hayt (third edition)is second to none. With it's clear and thorough mathematical coverage of circuits, a moderately intelligent student will get a solid grounding for most EE courses that follow. It also has chapters that cover everything you have to know about the mathematical derivation and circuit application of Fourier analysis, Fourier transforms, and Laplace transforms. The book is written for the student, and it's writing style is very helpful for both intuitive and mathematical understanding of all circuits and circuit related material covered. Containing just the right amount of humor, it is also enjoyable to read.

Lots of info with occasional poor definitions

This book gives a lot of information on circuit analysis techniques but some of the definitions are poor, especially with meshes and trees. Mesh loops actually are loops such that they cannot be formed with any of the other loops that were chose in the circuit. Also, their examples with RLC circuits give overly complicated methods of finding initial changes in inductor current or capacitor voltage. The book should show that an easy way to find initial changes in inductor current or capacitor voltage is to plug the initial inductor current or capacitor voltage into the nodal equation or loop equation that has been differentiated so that the change in inductor current or capacitor voltage is present in the equation.

What the Engineer Knows and the Technician Doesn't

This is not an easy book, and may stump those trying to use it
for self-study. Having said this, and with the proviso that you're
going to need some calculus, this could be the book for you.
This book contains the kind of information that the EE knows
and the ASET, and possibly the BSET, don't. This book can't
be read for pleasure. It requires careful and thorough study,
and working the exercises to test your understanding. But, if
you put forth the effort, you will be richly rewarded.

About the Author

Don Casey credits the around-the-world voyage of Robin Lee Graham, featured in National Geographic in the late 1960s, with opening his eyes to the world beyond the shoreline. After graduation from the University of Texas he moved to south Florida, where he began to spend virtually all his leisure time messing about in boats.

In 1983 he abandoned a career in banking to devote more time to cruising and writing. His work combining these two passions soon began to appear in many popular sailing and boating magazines. In 1986 he co-authored Sensible Cruising: The Thoreau Approach, an immediate best-seller and the book responsible for pushing many would-be cruisers over the horizon. He is also author of This Old Boat, a universally praised guide that has led thousands of boatowners through the process of turning a rundown production boat into a first-class yacht, and of Sailboat Refinishing, Sailboat Hull & Deck Repair, Canvaswork & Sail Repair, and Inspecting the Aging Sailboat, all part of the International Marine Sailboat Library. He continues to evaluate old and new products and methods, often trying them on his own 30-year-old, much-modified, Allied Seawind.

Lots of details in a small package

This is an excellent book for someone who knows nothing about fiberglass boat repair. It starts off with a brief discussion of the three major sealant types (polysulfide, polyurethane and silicone) and when to use each. Other sections cover the different types of resin, epoxy choices, etc. etc. Excellent information when trying to decide which of the gazillion products to purchase in the boating catalogs. Major sections include Leaks (finding and fixing, installing deck hardware), Restoring the Gloss (polishing and scratch repair), Deck Repairs (stress cracks, voids, nonskid surfaces, and teak decks), Laminate Repair (fiberglass layup, types of resins, epoxy), Core Problems (wet core, stiffening), Hull Repairs (gouges, blisters, impact damage), Keel and Rudder Damage (centerboard pivots, weeping keels, etc.) This little book is not afraid to tackle big projects--the Core Problems section for example shows the repair of a huge 2-foot diameter section of rotted core. The book makes it sound easy, but I'd rather not think about that much work. The section on gelcoat--what it is, how it is manufactured, and how to keep it looking good as long as possible--is by itself worth the price of the book.

2nd best book on Fiberglass repairs, and not just for sailboats

While I actually like "Fiberglass Repair: Polyester or Epoxy" by David and Zora Aiken a touch better than this book, they are both strong. They both have lots of clear ILLUSTRATIONS, which to my mind are preferable to photos at depicting this sort of information.

Blister repair (not addressed at all in older books on fiberglass repeair), wet deck cores, gelcoat cosmetics are all covered, as well as a good discussion of when to use Epoxy resins versus the cheaper Polyesters. I recommend this book for owners of ALL fiberglass boats, as the construction and repairs are quite universal.

The relatively large format of this book helps the clarity of the drawings, and makes it possible to imagine using it like a cookbook, propped open on the workbench as you step through the steps.

Just the facts

Style wise, this is the opposite of The Sailmaker's Apprentice by Marino. This is not a book to pick up while sitting by the fire sipping tea. It is a great reference book with concise "how to" information. I have a friend who told me that there is nothing beyand repair on a fiberglass boat. After reading this book, I'm beginning to belive him. Good explanations of both materials and techniques - including safety.

There is a lot more in Parking Spaces than you might think. It covers all the technical stuff, but is also full of ideas for making parking a better part of the city. I think that any serious firm should have this book.
