The first edition of the classic series. The value of old reference texts is for servicing old gear, which few remember or have parts for. This one reference will easily provide the framework for repairing vacuum tube devices, understand their specs when making modern substitutes, or interfacing new technology to old. Much of this information is not available on the 'net, maybe one day "Goo gel" with scan in and make it available free but until then, sadly, many libraries are unloading their collections for a song, literally the books are free, just pay S&H such as this purchase. Reference books are rarely read cover to cover, so they are often in very good shape except for the cover jacket. In this era, publishers made quality books, and the binding and hardcovers provided were made to last, compared to today's books. Get it while you can.

"Ask the Right Question! How to Get What You Want Every Time and In Any Situation" is an easy to read as well as enlightening book. It produces factual events, dialogues and explains what is effective or ineffective in how conversations are presented. Rupert Eales-White starts his book establishing that a good conversation is a planned conversation. If a person knows what their goal is in the conversation, they can ensure that the question is geared to achieving that goal. He points out that people must consciously and deliberately focus on the other person to know what to ask, when, and how often. His do's and don'ts on effective questioning are especially helpful. Demonstrates how to be effectively persuasive by setting up key strategies and exemplifying them in conversation. Dynamically coaches the reader on how to reach mutuality of people with different views and goals. Illustrates how to deal with conflict and provides tools to assist the reader in resolution of the conflicts. There are diagrams on how to set up an effective meeting, by careful planning, order, and understanding needs and common ground. An especially informative section was how to develop relationships. Focusing on how to talk to a boss, how a boss should talk with a subordinate, how to conduct an interview, and how to delight your client. Introducing you to the "discover kings" what, why, and how to generate open dialogues, resolve issues, solve problems, or seize opportunities. Offers tips on how to become more creative while harnessing the power of group discovery. Using a simple and concise style of showing the normal way in which most conversations go with a teenager, to asking the right kind of open question in order to elicit a response that is thought out. The open question being the key. The author focuses on teaching effective questioning skills as the key to improved communications and persuasion in many situations. Listening skills, context and concept development and approach formation are also reviewed for their benefits in achieving optimal communications. Suggestions are written in easy to read format that most people will be comfortable using, with many easy to understand examples or situations most of which we can relate a similar situation to. I highly recommend "Ask The Right Question - How to Get What You Want Every Time and In Any Situation" to everyone. Even if you think you communicate very well, I am sure there is still something beneficial to be learned from this book.

A Convenient Reading of the 2nd Edition

This is a re-issue of the 2nd edition in more modern form. There's no need to talk about the content and importance of this book to value-investor. But some reminder concerning this edition: 1) It is an abridged edition of the original 2nd edition (published in 1940). A total of 10 chapters have been deleted. 2) The Appendix Notes was also deleted. That's why the publisher could keep the pages at around 700+ something. 3) In compensation for the missing chapters, the publisher has attached a CD which contained the pdf format of the original 2nd edition (with 52 complete chapters as well as the Notes). I think that's really the most valuable part of this edition. That why I commented that it's a more convenient version of the 2nd edition.

What's New in This Edition

As other reviewers have pointed out, this (sixth) edition of Security Analysis includes a reprint of the popular 1940 edition (Warren Buffett's favorite), minus some chapters. The deleted chapters, which can be found in the CD that accompanies the book, make room for (new) general introductory remarks to this edition and also to the eight major parts of the book, written by a variety of modern commentators. If all you really want is the 1940 edition, then the better choice for you is probably to buy the currently in-print reprint that's available (for a lower cost that this sixth edition). You could also buy one of the books actually printed back in 1940, but that will set you back big bucks, because original versions of Security Analysis are collectors' items today. For example, a good copy of the first printing of the 1934 edition easily runs into five figures.

Concerning the 1940 edition (or just the 1940 chapters contained in this sixth version), other than for the references to corporate examples from the 1920s or 1930s, the content is amazingly relevant to today's investing. I had read Security Analysis (the fourth edition) many years ago, and I had forgotten just how clear, precise, insightful and truly sophisticated Graham and Dodd were. Remarkably, in many instances this 1940 edition does a better job describing 21st century investing issues than the majority of material written today.

What you get with this sixth edition that's not available in the other editions are a short (two page) foreword by Warren Buffett and 10 essays by some of the most well-regarded modern investors and authors. Indeed, it was an honor to be asked to contribute to the sixth edition. The essays run about 15 pages, on average, and many of them are highly informative and useful. Those written by Seth Klarman, James Grant, Roger Lowenstein and Bruce Berkowitz were my favorites. As good as they are, though, they basically provide useful insights and more modern applications, rather than plow much new intellectual ground. It's hard to improve much on Graham and Dodd, even after 70 years. If that seems hard to believe, read the book and see for yourself. Finally, if you haven't already read the 1940 edition, which book should you buy--a 1940 reprint or this sixth edition? My choice is the sixth edition.

6th Edition vs 2nd Edition

The 6th edition is the 2nd edition minus 10 chapters and the very valuable and data rich appendix however with new introductory chapters by various value investors. Although the introductory chapters are enlightening and somewhat informative, I would rather have had the valuable appendix. I wish they could have made the introductory chapters less lengthy and still included the appendix. I felt that many of the introductions although informative were rather windy at times and could have been reduced significantly and still gotten the point across. I know the appendix is on the CD, but that is a pain in the butt to have to look something up on CD as you're reading the book. It would be nice to just flip to the back quick to reference something up as you are reading. Honestly, if I had to do it over again and choose only 1 edition, I would have purchased the more practical and full text 2nd edition.

About the Author
Stephen Ross is presently the Franco Modigliani Professor of Finance and Economics at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the most widely published authors in finance and economics, Professor Ross is recognized for his work in developing the Arbitrage Pricing Theory and his substantial contributions to the discipline through his research in signaling, agency theory, option pricing, and the theory of the term structure of interest rates, among other topics. A past president of the American Finance Association, he currently serves as an associate editor of several academic and practitioner journals. He is a trustee of CalTech, a director of the College Retirement Equity Fund (CREF), and Freddie Mac. He is also the co-chairman of Roll and Ross Asset Management Corporation.

Randoloph W. Westerfield is Dean of the Marshall School of Business at University of Southern California and holder of the Robert R. Dockson Dean’s Chair of Business Administration. From 1988 to 1993, Professor Westerfield served as the chairman of the School’s finance and business economics department and the Charles B. Thornton Professor of Finance. He came to USC from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he was the chairman of the finance department and member of the finance faculty for 20 years. His areas of expertise include corporate financial policy, investment management and analysis, mergers and acquisitions, and stock market price behavior. Professor Westerfield has served as a member of the Continental Bank trust committee, supervising all activities of the trust department. He has been consultant to a number of corporations, including AT&T, Mobil Oil and Pacific Enterprises, as well as to the United Nations, the U.S. Department of Justice and Labor, and the State of California.

Bradford D. Jordan is Professor of Finance and Gatton Research Fellow in the Carol Martin Gatton College of Business and Economics at the University of Kentucky. He has a long-standing interest in both applied and theoretical issues in corporate finance, and has extensive experience teaching all levels of corporate finance and financial management policy. Professor Jordan has published numerous articles on issues such as cost of capital, capital structure, and the behavior of security prices.

Dated but worthy

I'm an amateur machinist. This book has some pretty good instructional & reference-type material on machining. It's no the Machinery Handbook [pure reference] but it's not something so exciting to read you can't put it down either [not by any stretch!] Probably completely outdated for modern NC production methods, but since I'm only interested in human hand-controlled hobby production, it works for me. Sure couldn't beat it at the price!

Good solid book

I'm not a mechanical engineer and I have been able to follow the book well. It goes really in depth in some places, so you have to know when to skip a few pages. But it is fine for a final year undergrad course, and I'm sure it would work for a grad course as well, but if you don't have a good math and science background (ie engineering), then just research [...] and then subscribe to a few car magazines. There is a lot of practical info in here as well, but don't kid yourself, most of this is theoretical backround. I am an electrical engineer who wanted to get into hybrid vehicles, and I think if you are like me and want to just buy one book on ICEs, this is it.

Huge Disappointment

Unlike the other reviewer, who is clearly a fan of Mr. Dunphy's writing, I found this novel (not memoir) tedious and unreadable. Like most readers, I was hoping for a glimpse into the private life of Capote and his long time companion and what their special bond was. Instead, almost the entire book is about a fictitious Father Synge, who is struggling with his faith and his homosexuality. Even on that level, it fails as good storytelling; Dunphy's faux-literary style is simply third-rate and his "story" (don't expect plot) is interminable. A straightforward memoir would have worked so much better, but after reading this, I think Dunphy has neither the writing chops nor the courage to tell a straightforward and honest account of his relationship with Truman. Bottom line: this is NOT a memoir of Jack Dunphy's life with Truman Capote.

Jack Dunphy's literary career was doubly cursed: first by his tendency to write hard, dark, and often bleak stories, the kind that rarely stand much of a chance with general audiences; second by his long relationship with Truman Capote, which had the effect of putting the far lesser-known Dunphy even further into the shadows. Those few who bother to seek out Dunphy's work now usually do so because they are Truman Capote fans and are curious about Capote's long-time paramour; but the fact is, unless a reader's taste in fiction is unusually wide-ranging (as I like to think mine is), the reader who likes Capote is very unlikely to enjoy the fiction of Jack Dunphy. Two more different writers, indeed, can hardly be imagined. Where Capote is lyrical, Dunphy is hard-edged; where Capote is sweet, almost sentimental, Dunphy can be merciless.
And "Dear Genius" is exactly the kind of brilliant Dunphy fiction that is practically guaranteed to alienate Capote fans. Yes, fiction: "Dear Genius," though billed as a memoir, is actually a *novel.* It does include Dunphy and Capote as characters (Dunphy narrates some sections), and one can safely assume that there is a good deal of factual material in the sections describing their lives together (or, more often, not together). But, in a move so audacious that one can hardly find words for it, Dunphy has interlaced a purely fictional narrative into the material, the story of a doubting priest, Father Synge, whose faltering faith is given a boost by a random encounter with an aging and drunk Truman Capote. But Father Synge is not really fictional: as Dunphy's headnote indicates, Synge is really himself, another version of himself. And Capote appears in a different guise too: as a brilliant young black boy named Robert Deveraux whom it will be Father's Synge's job to save from a dysfunctional mother. Truth and fiction, fiction and truth are interwoven here in scenes that can be so moving they bring tears to one's eyes---never more so than in the devastating final pages, as Father Synge comes to Dunphy's house to tell him that Capote has died. The final paragraph of "Dear Genius"---heartbroken, heart-breaking---deserves to rank right up there with Joyce's description of the falling snow at the end of "The Dead." Yes, it really is that good!
But "Dear Genius" is probably doomed to remain out of print and unread. The book irritates Capote readers, and in part they are justified in this: emblazoning the cover with the words "A Memoir of My Life With Truman Capote" is clearly false advertising, and it should be known that the subtitle was not Dunphy's but his publisher's (Dunphy had subtitled the manuscript "A Tribute To Truman Capote," which is vastly more accurate). But, over and above this, Dunphy is simply too demanding for many readers; he asks too much of those who are looking in his writing for something "like" his vastly more famous friend. Dunphy was like no one but himself. But if you are a reader who can rise to the challenge of difficult and utterly unique writing, do yourself a favor: find, read, and re-read a copy of "Dear Genius." (And while you're at it, do the same with Dunphy's "John Fury" and "Nightmovers.")

This is false advertising...only 1% of the book was about Capote, the rest of the book was an absurd fiction that had nothing to do with Capote.
