Good Text, but Outdated by Today's Investigative Tactics in Some Areas

This text book was as advertised, but too outdated for today's experienced investigator with all of the new and more sophisticated forensic trace evidence advantages over yesteryear. However, I did find that if one is looking to strengthen fundamentals of investigating it is quite detailed, and the evidence is that by its cover and use, many law officers have already been trained by its authority. Don't discount its value completely, there are significant merits.

About the Author
Alice A. Arana is an instructor in Spanish at Fullerton College. She received her M.A.T. from Yale University and her Certificate of Spanish Studies from the University of Madrid. Professor Arana taught Spanish at the elementary an high school levels, and has taught methodology at several NDEA summer institutes. She is coauthor of the first edition of A-LM Spanish, of Reading for Meaning-Spanish, and of several elementary school guides for the teaching of Spanish. In 1992, Professor Arana was named Staff Member of Distinction of Fullerton College, and was subsequently chosen as the 1993 nominee from Fullerton College for Teacher of the Year. She is currently serving as Academic Senate President.

Oswaldo Arana is Professor of Spanish, Emeritus, at California State University, Fullerton, where he has taught Spanish American culture and literature. He received his Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of Colorado. Professor Arana has taught at the University of Colorado, the University of Florida (Gainesville), and at several NDEA summer institutes. He served as a language consultant for the first edition of A-LM Spanish, and is coauthor of Reading for Meaning-Spanish and of several articles on Spanish American narrative prose.

María Sabló-Yates is a native of Panama. She holds a B.A. and an M.A. from the University of Washington(Seattle). She has taught at the University of Washington and Central Michigan University (Mt. Pleasant, Michigan), and is currently an instructor at Delta College (University Center, Michigan). She is the author of previous editions of the Puntos de partida Labroatory Manual, and of the first through fourth editions of the Laboratory Manual to accompany, ¿Qué tal? An Introductory Course.

Don't get this unless you are stuck buying only this.

This only gets one star, at best.

Book starts in the middle of nowhere and wanders all over the place. It's like trying to paint a house following a fly from room to room with a roller and a can of paint.

The publisher does a better job selling, and over-selling, the book and supplies than supporting (much less explaining) the CDs and Videos that can be purchased.

If you can find a simplier book, get it. This will work, but you'll have to wade through small print, "cute" articles, and silly exercises to get to the meat of the matter - learning Spanish.

I had to buy this for a continuing education class, but I have an old set of books and LPs that I really learned from to pass the course.

Any language course that "sells" you on learning "with your computer" was probably designed by people who think the computers on Star Trek really talked....

Great for listening and writing comprehension

I am a student that had to use this manual for a class and being able to interact with the tape for the oral excersizes and the book for written excersizes I learned the correct pronunceations and spellings for a large vocabular of words and phrases

Fascinating account of the conflict from a new perspective

You won't find the information you get in "Sacred War" in many other books. Whereas most Vietnam literature concentrates on American decision-making, this book reminds us that there was another side to the Vietnam War. A very detailed account of Vietminh and Viet Cong thinking and insightful as into why we didn't win the war.

Informative and easy to use

I got this book for my history class and have found it to be very informative and gives more than one point of view on the events it covers. (the only thing I find distracting is that the binding broke down right away - this happened with many other students who got their books from various places). The index is handy and the abbreviations key is helpful.

This is a great book, combine reading this book with a book or two written by Vietnam authors and you'll have a good picture of the war. Throw in "A Bright And Shining Lie" and you're damn near an expert.

Buy A Used Copy of Gregg Simplified, Not This Version

This review is not a critique of Gregg shorthand "Simplified Version," of which I am a huge fan and has proved invaluable for someone who attends frequent meetings. Instead, I am critical of the text being sold, because, unlike used copies, it does not contain an answer key to the exercises, which is extremely important. I learned this after I bought the new text, misplaced it, and ordered a used text for under $6.00, including S&H. Consequently, while I highly recommend Gregg Shorthand Simplified Version (there are a number of different versions and this is the most useful), I would only buy a used text.

Study this book! It's well worth your time.

Learning shorthand requires an effort, but it's well worth your time in the long run. Even if you quit after just studying the first half of this book, you will still be able to write at three or four times the speed of longhand. None of the systems based on the regular alphabet (such as Speedwriting, Stenoscript, Forkner or EasyScript) will let you attain such speeds. Moreover, Gregg shorthand is complete system of writing that you can use for all kinds of texts, not just for the stereotype formulas used in office dictation. And contrary to all the "modern", computer-based systems, Gregg shorthand is something you can use in all situations - you're not dependent on any kind of machine being at hand. It may take time and motivation to learn, but it's twice as useful as any of the "alphabet" systems, and it's a form of writing that will give you enormous benefit and pleasure both in your professional and your private life. I can recommend this book to anyone!

Great review to brush up on my shorthand from 44 years ago. Lessons are presented simply, in logical order, with lots of practice words available. I LOVE to make notes quickly, easily and in secret code!!!
