Not practical - very disappointing

I've read through this book and I can's say I'm any closer to understanding how to design a transformer than when I started. There are very view practical examples. The text is vague on nearly every subject it discusses. There is no discussion on how how to select a core size, or transformers for switching power supplies. There is a lot of discussion about things no-one cares about such as procurement practice, and quality assurance.

I bought this book hoping to get learn how to design a step up transformer ( a lower voltage to a higher one). The information in this book can be divided into two categories:
1) things you already know 2) things that you are not interested in
No attempt is made to present material in an intuitive format. Another weakness of the book is that several fromulas are presented with variables that are neither defined or explained. If you are interested in building you're own transformers don't waste your money on this book. The only value it has is as a reference for few formulas. There is little practical, useful information if you are looking to construct a specialty transformer for a design project.

The book seems somewhat out-dated and lacks a complete mathematical approach, however, is has been a very useful text as a companion to other texts that I have on this and related subjects. When I first perused the book I was dissapointed in the seemingly lack of mathematical analysis, but on closer examination and actual use of the book, I have found it to be quite useful and would recommend it to those who not particularly interested in a highly rigorous text.

An excellent intro

This is an excellent intro to this subject. Gibilisco takes you through the basics at a decent pace. He is very direct and precise, and doesn't waste your time repeating things (unlike other authors who have less to say, or can't say it right the first time). Excellent chapter review questions, when you're done with them you will know you know the stuff.

This is the most complete & professionally written technical book of any kind that I've ever studied! The author never forgets that the reader is the student and not the expert. I learned so much from this book in spite of the fact that I've been an industrial electrician for 18 years! Thank you for writing such a fine text.

The Best I've tried so far for the true Beginner

This is the only book on electronics I've read that I didn't have to use another book as a reference for. The author starts off assuming the reader is new to electronics and doesn't forget that as he introduces new topics; most authors at some point start talking in techspeak without explanation or zoom ahead to get to their favorite topic; this one doesn't. He explains topics one at a time, without zooming from electrons to transdimensional quark theory. The book starts with electricity, what it is, what it does, how its behavior relates to electronics, and he introduces the various components, circuits, and ideas one at a time. It is not intended to be a circuit design or hobby book; but this is the one to read before progressing to those books, because they will not guide you through the concepts like this author does. By the end of it, you will confidently be able to go onto a more advanced book. My only quibble with the book is that he sometimes does not go into a subject in enough technical detail, but for that Basic Electronics course by Norman Crowhurst is a nice complement. You don't need it as a reference, but it goes more into technically advanced explanations on certain concepts/circuits. (But doesn't explain things as clearly for the beginner as Gibilisco does.) If you're looking for ONE book that covers it all perfectly, you won't find it. But this is the best beginning book I've found.

Conversely, on parallel tracks, scientists have been developing robots that will use this artificial intelligence. From the tests devised by Alan Turing in the 1940s, to today's robots, voice-recognition personal computers, and expert systems, the fields of AI and robotics have become an integral part of our everyday existence.

This encyclopedia attempts to connect these two fields with concise, easy-to-read definitions and illustrations. More than 500 terms, concepts, and important people and corporations in AI and robotics are arranged alphabetically. Each is clearly defined in entries ranging in length from one or two paragraphs to more than two pages. Such terms as Prototype, Nanotechnology, and Joint-Force Sensor are defined in one or two sentences. Broader concepts such as Language, Memory, Problem Reduction, and Speech Recognition have entries of several paragraphs to more than a page.

Some of the other topics covered include Binocular Robot Vision, Computer Consciousness, Police Robots, and Speech Synthesis. People and corporations discussed include Forrest Carter, Microsoft Corporation, and George Lucas of Star Wars fame. Hundreds of black-and-white illustrations help visualize such difficult concepts as Artificial Stimulus, Biased Search, and Dynamic Transducer. The editor makes liberal use of cross-references to link concepts together. An index provides additional access.

In an attempt to give a broad overview of the fields of AI and robotics, this encyclopedia lacks the detail of larger publications. The Concise International Encyclopedia of Robotics (Wiley, 1990) and the two-volume Encyclopedia of Artificial Intelligence (2d. ed., Wiley, 1992) offer readers more in-depth scholarly treatment of these topics, but they can be complicated and confusing for the novice. Therefore, libraries not owning these other two works, or those desiring a good overview of two difficult subjects, will want to purchase The McGraw-Hill Illustrated Encyclopedia.

Including all the basics together with some areas seldom covered in texts of this type, well illustrated, and without obfuscation, this book discusses many disorders, syndromes and mental functions; the etiology of disorders, the history and rationale underlying models and testing. Suitable for the graduate student or professional neuropsychologist, and attractively produced. Well worth the price

Great Resource

This is a good overview of history for the high school or college student - very detailed with suggested reading at the end of each chapter. It is text-heavy and in black and white with a some color plates in the middle. I like the organization and the focus on concepts and people rather than dates and other minutia.

Excellent work for students and general readers alike

This book traces the history of the western world, from ancient Egypt up to the fall of the Berlin wall.
The book is divided into periods of history, then further subdivided into sections about that period. You can 'dip-in' to a section easily, I find myself picking the book up for a light spot of reading with a cup of tea. I also use this book heavily in my Classics course - so it has a multitude of uses.
Overall, a thorough, unbiased, but easy to read account of western civilization. If you live in the western world, and are wondering where you came from or why things are the way they are, then get this book!
