HVAC Systems Design Handbook Review

As a newcomer to the HVAC industry I found the book to very informative...it was presented in such a way, however, that makes it very hard to read. SMACNA puts out a few manuals that are less "dry" and a lot easier to read. I would recommend that anyone who is interested in this publication to have some general knowledge of the HVAC industry in order to make understanding this book easier.

This book is aimed at the engineering design professional but I found it to be a major disapointment. There are a number of good texts available on this subject but this one, like so many of Roger Haines' other books, is a superficial overview with little if any practical information.

Not as expected.

I found this book informative rather than practical as implemented by publisher to be a working tool primarily for desingers. People with basic knowlege of HVAC might enjoy reading this book to get some general but not in-depth engineering knowlege of HVAC systems, but there is not much for designers who need analytical information and knowledge of calculation procedures.

This book is simply excellent. It covers surveying subjects thoroughly and with great technical depth. It taught me to calculate state plane coordinate conversions by hand so that I understand what happens in a computer.

This is the type of text that will elevate the PLS profession.

this turned out to be the best decision I ever made

I purchased this book for a class while I was in college, I didn't use it very much for the class and I refused to sell it back after the class was over because I couldn't get back anywhere near what I paid for it, this turned out to be the best decision I ever made, because now that I'm working as an engineer I use this book very often as a reference when trying to decipher the surveying notes taken in the field.

This text was originally composed in 1966 and was updated in 1987 & 1993. Since the last update the design procedures recommended by the ACI have been radically revised and this book is therefore essentiall useless to today's designers. It might have some elementary applications, but the buyer should be warned major revisions in design procedures in the late 90's and after render the book outmoded

Need a replacement

I bought the original first edition in 1980 to prepare for my P.E. exam. As I work very often with concrete design, this book is a must have. I really wore out my old copy (which I had to go to several stores to find back then) and could never find a new one. Thank you Amazon for this opportunity.
The nice thing is that it is easy to understand, and gives related info on retaining walls, (what I work with, mostly) and soil mechanics.
So after 20 years, I am grateful for this opportunity. One can not say enough about the Schaum's Series. I graduated college 30 years ago next month with a degree in Civil Engineering, and if it weren't for Schaum's (and Cliff's notes for that English Class) I don't know how I would ever have done it.
Agree all the titles that I have had experience with are excellent, simple to understand, and economical, too even though the current prices are more than they were 20-30 years ago when I purchased most of my Schaum's library. Keep up the good work.

Good for beginners as well as practicing engineers

This is a nice book on reinforced concrete design. Although it aims mainly to students, you will be benefitted even if you are a practicing engineer. It is mainly written on ACI code on both USCS & SI units, but the book is useful even if you follow some other country's code. It covers all basic & some advanced design concepts. Chapters include - materials, loads, design methods & preocedures, shear, torsion, detailing, servicability, columns, footings, beam, slabs, retaining walls etc. Main asset of the book is that it is very concise, yet covered almost everythin with a good number of solved problems.

This was my text in high school, and when I found it in a used book store, I snapped it up immediately. I still reference it all the time. Alright as overview only.

The book is alright as a broad overview of packaging concepts, however does not dive down in any great detail on each concept, as other engineering handbooks typically do. This is evident in the small number of pages as compared to other engineering handbooks (i.e. Industrial Engineering Handbook, Chemistry Engineering Handbook, ect..).

It's ok for people not familiar with packaging, but you will not be able to derive much serviceable instructional value from the book (i.e. how to design a carton, or crate).

About the Author
Stewart Ewen is professor of media studies and chair of the Department of Communications at Hunter College. He is also a professor in the Ph.D. programs in history and sociology at the City University of New York Graduate Center. He is the author of the acclaimed Captains of Consciousness, Channels of Desire, and All Consuming Images, the last of which provided the basis for Bill Moyers’s award-winning PBS series The Public Mind. He lives in New York City.

Stuart Ewen. Captains of Consciousness. Basic Books, 2001

Preface says that some reviewers labeled the book as "Marxist". They definitely missed the point. Feeling sympathetic towards Proletariat isn't Marxism exclusive trademark. Yet the book definitely lacks the depth of economic analysis and feeling of history (including actual class struggle) to fit the best standards of historical materialism. H. Zinn's "People's History of the USA" is much more monumental in collecting the social and economical realities of the US of the period.

As M. Schudson rightfully noted, the author of "Captains" too often takes the bluffing of second-rate admen at face value as the industry's real best practices. All this comes under obvious ideological inspiration of Marcuse.

Still the book seems to be the only study of advertising history that takes into consideration the working-class, including immigrants. Virtually all others suggest that there was no life outside of "Middle Class America".

Thus "Captains" are the must for any researcher or student in advertising sociology who wants to broaden his/her prospective.

Consumer society revealed

This book is a penetrating analysis of the origins of our mass-culture, consumerist society. First, the author debunks the notion that consumerism was a natural technological development or clearly represents progress.
The author makes evident that the captions of industry sought to exert control over the entire social milieu beginning in the 1920s. Their foremost project was to define American life as consumerism. Consumption was marketed as far more than acquiring the essentials of life; it was a means to transform one's life: to achieve social esteem, to escape otherwise mediocre, humdrum lives. It was very much an individualistic approach to life in contrast to the traditional focus on small communities or extended families.
Industrialism was not easily swallowed by workers of the 19th and early 20th century. Traditional social bonds became irrelevant in factory production. Also under scientific management work was systematically deskilled and redefined by management. The strike wave of 1919 and the "Red Scare" of the early 20's convinced economic elites to set upon a course of pacification of discontented citizens in addition to measures of suppression.
The advertising in the 20's tried to convince that the mass production of consumable items was of tremendous benefit to society. The "freedom" of workers as consumers to transform their lives more than offset the actual loss of control over work processes. Every effort was made to see that mass-culture goods penetrated and hence defined all areas of life. Non-acceptance of that corporate-defined world was not viewed kindly. Virtually all non-market activity was cast as secondary, if not illegitimate. Buying superceded voting as the means to social remedy. Even families became purchasing units.
By the 1950s the transformation of the US to a consumerist culture was virtually complete. The penetration of corporate-owned television into all households ensured that alternatives to consumerism would not surface which was a continuation of the trend of centralization of all media outlets. The free-market and free trade ideologues of the 1990s are merely following in those same footsteps.
Though written 25 years ago, this book remains relevant today. More recent authors such as Kuttner, Schiller, Lindblom, or Frank can only add to what Ewen has already said.

In Genealogy Online, Elizabeth Powell Crowe presents modern-age genealogy tips, tricks, and resources to the family historian. Be aware that Crowe focuses on genealogists who wish to learn how to use computer resources rather than on computer users who wish to learn how to do genealogy. She spends a fair amount of time discussing cyberspace basics--what the Internet is, how to use modems, netiquette, and choosing an ISP. Crowe then gives examples of the help that can be found on ROOTS-L and other mailing lists, the Web, and various bulletin board systems. This book was great when it first came out and gave a marvellous overview of the Internet and the available resources. Unfortunately the Internet moves quickly and this book is virtually useless for current genealogy on the Internet. Look to more recent publications.
