The best advanced statistics book for biologists

Like all advanced stats books, this one has mathematical rigor and plenty of examples. But unlike the others, this one is written from the point of view of a biologist. You won't just learn the math, you'll learn how to make sense of the results. The title is a bit misleading. This is not a "primer" of statistics. But once you've learned the basic principles of statistics, this is THE book to learn about various kinds of ANOVAS and regressions.

Security Analysis is the bible of fundamental analysis. Originally published in 1934, the tome systematically lays bare the science of security analysis. Written with the assistance of cowriter David Dodd, Benjamin Graham's intellectual tour de force has yet to be equaled in the annals of investing. Written only a few years after the devastating stock market crash of 1929, Graham had one objective--to make the investment process as safe as possible using knowledge of key factors about the business.

Beginning with bonds and moving quickly to stocks, Graham and Dodd go over all of the angles. Articulating a comprehensive theory of fixed-value and common stock investment, they examine in detail the various factors that one should consider when valuing securities. Dividends, extraordinary items, depreciation, amortization, capital structure and balance sheet analysis are all described and defined in lurid detail. It is impossible to read Security Analysis and not come away with a deeper understanding of corporate finance and how it relates to investing.

On the downside, let's be frank--Security Analysis is not an easy book to read. A Convenient Reading of the 2nd Edition

This is a re-issue of the 2nd edition in more modern form. There's no need to talk about the content and importance of this book to value-investor. But some reminder concerning this edition: 1) It is an abridged edition of the original 2nd edition (published in 1940). A total of 10 chapters have been deleted. 2) The Appendix Notes was also deleted. That's why the publisher could keep the pages at around 700+ something. 3) In compensation for the missing chapters, the publisher has attached a CD which contained the pdf format of the original 2nd edition (with 52 complete chapters as well as the Notes). I think that's really the most valuable part of this edition. That why I commented that it's a more convenient version of the 2nd edition.

What's New in This Edition

As other reviewers have pointed out, this (sixth) edition of Security Analysis includes a reprint of the popular 1940 edition (Warren Buffett's favorite), minus some chapters. The deleted chapters, which can be found in the CD that accompanies the book, make room for (new) general introductory remarks to this edition and also to the eight major parts of the book, written by a variety of modern commentators. If all you really want is the 1940 edition, then the better choice for you is probably to buy the currently in-print reprint that's available (for a lower cost that this sixth edition). You could also buy one of the books actually printed back in 1940, but that will set you back big bucks, because original versions of Security Analysis are collectors' items today. For example, a good copy of the first printing of the 1934 edition easily runs into five figures.

Concerning the 1940 edition (or just the 1940 chapters contained in this sixth version), other than for the references to corporate examples from the 1920s or 1930s, the content is amazingly relevant to today's investing. I had read Security Analysis (the fourth edition) many years ago, and I had forgotten just how clear, precise, insightful and truly sophisticated Graham and Dodd were. Remarkably, in many instances this 1940 edition does a better job describing 21st century investing issues than the majority of material written today.

What you get with this sixth edition that's not available in the other editions are a short (two page) foreword by Warren Buffett and 10 essays by some of the most well-regarded modern investors and authors. Indeed, it was an honor to be asked to contribute to the sixth edition. The essays run about 15 pages, on average, and many of them are highly informative and useful. Those written by Seth Klarman, James Grant, Roger Lowenstein and Bruce Berkowitz were my favorites. As good as they are, though, they basically provide useful insights and more modern applications, rather than plow much new intellectual ground. It's hard to improve much on Graham and Dodd, even after 70 years. If that seems hard to believe, read the book and see for yourself. Finally, if you haven't already read the 1940 edition, which book should you buy--a 1940 reprint or this sixth edition? My choice is the sixth edition.

6th Edition vs 2nd Edition

The 6th edition is the 2nd edition minus 10 chapters and the very valuable and data rich appendix however with new introductory chapters by various value investors. Although the introductory chapters are enlightening and somewhat informative, I would rather have had the valuable appendix. I wish they could have made the introductory chapters less lengthy and still included the appendix. I felt that many of the introductions although informative were rather windy at times and could have been reduced significantly and still gotten the point across. I know the appendix is on the CD, but that is a pain in the butt to have to look something up on CD as you're reading the book. It would be nice to just flip to the back quick to reference something up as you are reading. Honestly, if I had to do it over again and choose only 1 edition, I would have purchased the more practical and full text 2nd edition.

Excellent reference for background of the Spanish Riding School

THE SPANISH RIDING SCHOOL: Four Centuries of Classic Horsemanship by Hans Handler, Photos by Erich Lessing, Translated from the German by Russell Stockman (1972). I love this book and it, along with The White Stallions of Vienna, is the best resource for visual studies of the history of the Spanish Riding School. The chronology of the Spanish Riding School in oversized "coffee table book" format, but with impeccable German detail to text detail and lots of explanatory illustrations. This is probably the best all-around book available. This book also gives a good impression of the depth of training for both horse and rider.

Should be in every Serious Finance Student's Library

Professor Greynolds and his co-authors wrote what I believe to be THE pioneering work in the field of time value of money analysis using financial calculators. Admitted: This serious work is "out of print", but quality work, quality workmanship NEVER goes out of style. This is a fine book for anyone who is interested in understanding the underlying concepts--and indeed mastering much of them--of the time value of money field. In fair part my HP real estate problem solving books might never have been written had I not been inspired by this quality work. Professor Greynolds is to be commended for this publication. Studying a work like this can make one a better, indeed, a much better TVM instructor. To know, to understand the flow of numbers/data through a financial system by mastering the underlying equations makes us more confident as instructors and indeed makes us more confident as finance practitioners. Bert's book does this and much more.

He has been the recipient of the Gold Medal and the Sabine Medal of the Acoustical Society of America, the Franklin Medal of the Franklin Institute, the Gold Medal of the Audio Engineering Society, and the A.I.A. Medal of the American Institute of Architects.

This book is not well written; it contains spelling and grammatical errors. Furthermore, this book omits the basics and discusses everything in a confusing and convoluted manner, giving virtually no realistic examples or applications. I had absolutely no use for this book in my Embedded Systems course at Brown University.

I bought this book because of its comprehensive contents but I believe it was a bad choice. It is a horribly written book with grammatical errors, bad English and very bad description of topics. It is memory dump of the writer, nothing else..

Great bargain, still suitable as an introduction

This is a reprint of the 1974 2nd edition. So what is Numerical Analysis? It's the down-and-dirty methods of approximation and interpolation of equations that don't have closed-formed mathematical solutions. Just about every real-world problem in material engineering from pipe flow, wing design, convection currents to multivariate econometrics have to resort to numerical approximations. You'll find all the familiar names from your undergrad Math and Physics courses here (Newton, Gauss, Largrange, etc.); however, advanced methods in Numerical Analysis has changed tremendously since this book was published. Since NA is dependent on present computing power, what was once too expensive or unthinkable in the 70s can be done today. However, it's still a great introduction and a great bargain from Dover. The writing style is informal and conversationally peer-to-peer, rather than teacher-to-student. There is no historic consciousness placing methods and men in context. You won't find programming algorithms here (not even Fortran or Pascal). There are probably better books out there for what ever your specific speciality is, but at five times the price of this Dover reprint. You'll will find the old favorites here. The book covers the various finite difference approximations (forward, backward and central differences). It uses the operational approach for these. The later chapters cover splines, continued fraction and iterative methods. More importantly it covers the difference between round-off error v. truncation of divergent series in approximations -- something that still confuses practicing professionals. Be warned there have been many improvements in theory and methods in finite element methods of Fluid Dynamics and other 3D modeling (bezier and NURBS); And, the whole world of Complexity and Chaos theory happened well AFTER this book was published. Calculus and Differential EQs are prerequisite, there's no attempt at introduction in the text.

Outstanding, but with a limitation

Although old, this is still an outstanding introduction to a wide range of topics in numerical analysis. I get impatient with the amount of detail Hildebrand devotes to some topics, but that's because those are topics where I already know the techniques and pitfalls.

However, I have one serious criticism of this book. Hildebrand in very many places drags in the question of inherent errors in input data, but fails to distinguish the different views one must take depending on how one got involved with some topic. In 50+ years of doing numerical analysis and numerical software from time to time, I have come to realize that three quite different issues of inherent error occur.

First, one may be working with scientists or engineers to derive results for a specific problem or set of problems. In this case, one must ask two pertinent questions, and keep asking until one gets clear answers: "How are you getting the input data?" and, "What are you going to do with the results?" Given answers to these two questions, one can do analysis and computation knowing from the start how accurate the input data is likely to be, and how much that matters to the results. Hildebrand pays little attention to the quite complicated problem of how one should do the analysis and programming in those situations.

Second, it may happen that there is no input data from the real world, and hence no inherent error; the input data is conjured up out of whole cloth, as happens in many calculations in "computational physics". In those cases, one wants to produce results that accurately reflect the hypotheses provided by the people with the problem to be solved. Usually, one finds in such cases that the more accurately one can do the computation or analysis, the better one can serve one's users.

Third, and most difficult, is the situation where one is writing a utility routine for use by large numbers of people, most of whom one will never encounter. Everyone who has done much numerical programming faces this issue from time to time. Here the problem is that the users are likely to place absolute faith in the results, even in cases where you, as the implementer of the software or originator of the analysis, may know all too well that the results are unstable with respect to very minor variations in input data. This occurs with monotonous regularity, for example, in routines that manipulate matrices to derive such quantities as eigenvalues and eigenvectors. In my own experience, a high proportion of the actual matrices that users present to "utility packages" are ill-conditioned, and there's a reason for this. If the problem were well-conditioned, it wouldn't be a problem for the scientists or engineers or financial types who need a solution; they would know a priori from experience what the answers are. I have no good answer for how one should think about such "utility software" and neither does Hildebrand. The way I deal with it myself is to ensure that mathematically accurate results are provided even for ill-conditioned problems, and to provide documentation for users that includes the equivalent of: "If you ask this software a stupid question, it will give you a stupid (but correct) answer, so if you are unsure about the stability of your data, please call or visit or email me to discuss your specific problem."

In short, despite the virtues of this book, it doesn't come to grips with the issue of numerical analysis and mathematical computation that I have found causes me more headaches than any other.

Obviously a little dated, but very high quality

The quality of the writing is extremely high in this book. It's obvious that the author was a most attentive teacher. It may not have C++ or Matlab code or a lot of the modern techniques.
As an introduction you can't go wrong with this book which is excellent for self-study, especially at the price.

What comes through in this book is the author's deep sympathy for Pollock - tempered with outrage at the neglect of "the brilliant but vulnerable," while they live and struggle to survive. Take the time to view the paintings as they are mentioned in the book. You may love them or hate them, but you will be changed by the experience...

I was wowed reading this energetic, straightforward book, mainly by the many connections made--how Pollocks studies with the great Mexican muralist Orosco who used used/taught a dripping splashing underpainting technique can logically link to how Pollock got splashing and painting on large scale canvases---to the influence of other artists, such as Picasso, on the early works of Jackson Pollock, to the revelation of Pollock's love of and use of found natural forms...

Good for its time

This may have been one of the better Pollack books when it came out in 1972, but now I think its main use is for die hards who want every detail. And the details are exhausting: galleries, museums, who what where - too much for me. What I was looking for was more process/personal/mindset stuff, and there is some but you have to go through a lot to get to the little of it there is. I recommend "Jackson Pollack" by Ellen G. Landau. Great reproductions and good text.

Jackpot!

First off, the first author was a former instructor at my university. I have never taken on of his courses, so this review has no bearing on the individual.
On the other hand, I'm taking a Linear Systems course and the required textbook is Signals and Systems by Oppenheim, one of the most expensive coffee table props to exist on this side of Silicon Valley.
Schaum's was only (price) and it seemed to cover all of the concepts found in a standard Linear Systems course. The only major difference was that instead of useless graphs, more useless techno-babble (to satisfy the needs of some Ph.D's that want to confuse the students so they feel strong and powerful - in other words maintain their authority), and sparse problems and even less frequent solutions, the text contains DETAILED solutions for its problems, along with useful equations and tables that HELP rather than confuse the student.
If you're taking a Linear Systems course, this book is MANDATORY. If instructors are reading this review, I highly recommend you grab a copy and see if you can use it as a supplement.
As a student, I can tell you that if you made other students purchase this text as a requirement, they would all eventually pick up a copy. It's THAT helpful.
I paid $100 for our required textbook and it's money down the drain.

Most useful even as a text book.

Most Schaum's Outlines are usually supplements to a standard text book with lots of solved problems. This book actually can serve as a text book. It's organization is a pleasure. The subject is presented in a simple, well thought out matter, covers both the analog and digital areas. I highly recommend it. More advanced textbooks will be easier to read after you finish this book. The price makes it definitely a good bargain!

Mandatory book for anyone working with signals and transform

This is truly an excellent book to quickly recap the essentials of signals and their manipulations. By working along with the exercises, I was quickly able to come back to speed on such important issues such as convulutions, Fourier Transforms, and LTI systems.
