Terrific as an overview, review, or supplement...

I studied and learned most of this stuff years ago, and then proceeded to forget much of it as the years passed. But as a software developer, I have occasionally needed to refresh my understanding of some neglected area of mathematics... and this book has been invaluable for that. It might also be helpful as a supplementary text for students learning some area of math for the first time, since the explanations are often much more helpful and straightforward than anything I remember from my textbooks.

The explanations are clear and concise, with useful diagrams, examples, and problems (with fully-worked-out solutions in the back) to help test and verify your understanding. The authors don't waste a lot of time, but still manage to keep the topic interesting by appropriate use of real-world examples and clear explanations. A very good book...

Expand your understanding of numbers and nature

I don't imagine that "Mastering Technical Mathematics" will wind up on the top of anyone's book list. But if you have an interest in math the book can expand your understanding of numbers from counting through geometry and trig on to the calculus. If you're looking for a book to get you through next weeks' test on logarithms I'd stick with a Schaum's Outline but if you really want to know what a logarithm is and how they are derived, how they are applied, and how they can make your life easier, well, all of that is found here.

It's not all easy going. Like all math, each part is built on an understanding of the previous part (precisely why I failed intermediate algebra!) Some of the concepts can be hard to understand, too. But as you work though each chapter and, especially if you work through the problems, you'll gain a deeper understanding of numbers and how they relate to nature.

Better than high school

I learned more from this book than 4 years in high school taught me...

Maybe I just wasn't ready for "math" at 16, but whatever they taught me in highschool didn't stick. Later, I realized that I really did need to know this stuff, so I decide to brush up on it - this is the book I got.

If this had been the text book I had in school, I probably wouldn't have needed to brush up. Everything was so much easier to understand in this book...

I have read many such books, yet this tops them all for its relative simplicity while still being able to get across its point. A Good Guide to Business Accounting

For those of you who find accounting dry and boring, this book is a good read. Its well laid out and easy to understand. Although accounting is a dry and boring subject, the authors communicate basic concepts to the reader in a way that helps the novice understand accounting prinicples and financial statements. This book is a must read for anyone wanting to understand financial statements or start and run a business. It was a big help to me in understanding some of the concepts which before I read it, did not make sense to me. Its written for us non-financial people.

Excellent Highway Design Reference

This is an in depth reference for every aspect of horizontal and vertical geometry. Contains base theory, then all of the necessary equations for calculating sight distances, vertical curve lengths, horizontal and vertical curve obstructions. Some of the values used should be cross-referenced with values from the AASHTO Green Book, as some of the design values in the book may be out of date. Also discusses spiral curves, compund curves, unsymmetrical vertical curves. There are equations, detail narratives, and example problems in this book, that I have not seen in any other manual. An excellent companion to your Green Book, CERM, and HCM.

This book is an excellent reference if you are performing any type of engineering or surveying work that involves spiral or vertical curves. Though it is an older book, the collection of formulas is unsurpassed. Just ignore the pictures of '57 Chevys cruising down the highways. :)

I've used Epstein's book together with Michalko's "Thinkertoys," in my creative thinking seminars with great success. You can't fail with these two books.

A different approach

This book focuses on the stimuli (inputs/old ideas) and effective capaturing of responses (outputs/creative ideas) vs most other books about creativity focus on the thinking process, like mindmapping, six hats, thinking toys, etc. Thus, it directs to a total different path of how we build an environment to boost creativity. My analogy is no matter what thinking process you introduce, a group of housewives cannot invent a racket to reach the moon (don't get me wrong, I highly respect housewives for their contribution to families). It's the relevancy and variety of the inputs that matters.
I guess the author is a behaviourist who see thinking process as black box, i.e. non-observable and non-measurable. Thus, he only concentrates on the observable and measurable stimuli and responses.
I am a trainer for creativity for my company. I find this book very useful. The only complaint is that not all the games are up to my personal standard: able to demonstrate the theory AND able to energize the participants.
All in all, I highly recommand this book. You will see creativity in a different angle.
